Questions about M1 Garand from a novice

Received my 2 hxp ammo cans today. Rifle has yet to ship though[angry] Hit estore on 9/3 and already have ammo, so rifle should be shipping next week I hope.

break it open and count it, I seemed to always get 204 rounds. Also fun to check the headstamps for anything non-HXP and the projectiles too in case an AP or tracer snuck in the mix. Wear gloves or be prepared for very dirty hands

Watch for a serial # in your estore order and it'll ship right after that appears.

Probably a stupid question, but I have a friend who wants to help me build a Garand. I know literally nothing about the Garands. He is going to to hook me up with a nice Breda receiver and going to piece by piece it together. Anything I need to worry about ordering Garand parts such as barrels, stocks, etc? Not even sure if this is compliant, approved list, blah, blah, etc. Was going to do some research but before that figure I would ask here.

U will need a receiver wrench and a barrel block to assemble the receiver to the barrel, and a basic understanding of how to time the barrel, otherwise nothing will align when assembling the rest of the gun.

building out a garand unless your going for "match" build is a costly adventure. you can buy a CMP special already built 1000$
If you can get a great price on the reciever and hunt down Breda parts it would be a cool project.
Just for the basics if you plan to do the barrel yourself. Reciever wrench, barrel vice and a finish reamer set up will set you back 400$
The only "kits" I have seen in past few years run 1000$
New barrel 180$ Good bolt complete run 150+, Gas cyl are 199$ stock set is 125 ? CMP sells all sorts of parts now... have fun and do some shopping

I didn't even think to count the rounds. I did go through some of it to look at the different year headstamps. Quite a range, earliest was 71 and latest was 82 if I recall. Are certain years better than others?? I kind of doubt that it would matter but maybe I'm wrong.

I had 2 cans of HXP 1972 from the same lot HXP 4044-72 to be exact THE CLIPS SUCKED and the ammo was only slightly better... Milk jug accuracy @ 50 yards ammo

My Garand has shipped! Will be here tomorrow. Although I'm working in Fall River until Wednesday or Thursday but have to drive back home tomorrow night for wedding stuff with my fiancé.

Anyway the invoice says the serial number is 70828. So from my basic research, that means it was made between September and October of 40'? I asked for USGI wood, find out soon what I got.

Nice early date.

T

Yeah I'm pretty excited. Although I don't know if it will be in worse shape than a later model? I definitely want one that will shoot decent but if it has good wear to give it character, that's great.

The October of '41 FG I hand picked at CMP South in June has the worst barrel (3+/4; 11/46) of any of my Garands, but out shoots all of them. I lucked out with a correct GHS/SA stock and almost all parts date to '41 or '42.

Wow that's interesting that it shoots the best. Seems like it's the luck of the draw on how they shoot. I like the dark wood on your Garand. I got my fingers crossed that they got me GI wood like I asked for.

this happens I also have a SA that reads 3 and 4+ on the hang tag. out shoots my other SA with 1 and 2 readings.... although both my HRAs shoot better than the SAs.

Damn that's a lot of parts haha thanks! So are the earlier garands good to have because of the history/use compared to later models? Rarer? I would assume the quality/accuracy etc. doesn't necessarily matter with the year made?

They are all rebuilds, so no real special value. Earlier 4-, 5-, and 6-digit SNs are popular with collectors because they have a 'low' SN. An early and matched one would bring a premium over later and matched example, however.

post ware variants are not as common, lots of people like the WWII era recievers. CMP cherry picks the shit out of the garands anything remotely rare or unusual will got to CMP auction and fetch the big bucks....... It will be nice to see what you do end up with...I would be happy with such a low number no matter what, It will be nice to see if the original barrel has stayed with it all these years......
just think that garand has had to go through several rearsenal tours in its almost 75yr life !!!!!! 75 YEARS

Ahh that's right, I forget that they're not untouched after all these years.

Just glanced on eBay and found a seller with good feedback selling 5 enbloc clips made by Aggressive Engineering? $6.60 shipped, not a bad deal.

Yeah I can't wait to see if they were able to get me GI wood like I asked.

JPM, thats a good site for parts reference since it can be broken down by manufacture. I enjoy finding that a good handful of parts on mine are WW2 production.
