Plate Carriers, Armor and Spalling

can't rep moar at the moment, but thanks for that link--doze be cheep. i like cheap.

cheap vest and i can split up the plates if necessary and just give the lady my rear plate, or buy her a chest plate/a set.

Now you are thinking tactically frugal.

Just got back from the range and tested my plate with canvas. 5 rds of M855 at 50 yds from a 16" barrel. 4 rds were fired at the center and 1 fired at the edge. The 4 rds at the center I only had 2 fragments exit. The 1 shot fired at the side and hit about 2 inches from the edge, the spall cut through the edge and exited leaving about a 4" tear along the edge of the plate. I have not dissected the canvas yet but it seems like the canvas in about a 2.5" radius around the bullet hole is all chewed to hell so I am not surprised that the edge blew out. I am pleased with the results. No deformation on the back of the plates from the rounds. I am pleased with the results. Going to redo the canvas and tape and throw it back in the carrier. Sorry no pics. Waiting on a new camera as my fantastic children broke yet another one.

The plate was one of the early ones from The Targetman. I also have some from ar500armor.com. I like the fit of the ar500 better as they have an advanced shooters cut which gives a little more room to shoulder a rifle. Playing with the 2 it is definitely more comfortable and doesn't seem like I am giving up any protection.

What's the price on that canvas vs denim?

Also there's multiple grades of denim, I didn't think too much about it as I was cutting up old jeans. I imagine tougher/thicker denim might make a difference, if you were buying it rather than using old jeans.

hey, if you shoot some TTM plates i won't have to! [laugh]

got a .30-06 you can throw at it?!

also armorhomos--why would this not be sufficient IIIA protection?

with this insert: http://www.skdtac.com/velocity-systems-10x12-plate-backer-p/amr.110.htm

in this carrier: http://www.beezcombatsystems.com/BCS-NIJ-II-Carrier-BCS-NIJII.htm

yes it won't stop rifle as it's soft armor--but if you need rifle protection you throw in a plate. otherwise this should be fine. OR are we talking more about inserts like this:

http://www.skdtac.com/Velocity-Systems-BALCS-CIRAS-Soft-Armor-Insert-p/amr.101.htm

...which would basically mean "you're spending $500 just get a carrier and ceramic plates."

It was duck canvas from Joanns. On sale for about 5.50 a yd. I bought 5 yds and had a coupon for $5 off a 25 or more purchase so it was about 4.50 a yd. 2 yds will cover 3 10x12 plates. I also used the wide gorilla tape which is about $15 a roll. A roll did 2.5 plates. So it was about 9 bucks a plate to cover them.

I went with the canvas because when I went to the store to get denim, the stuff they had looked pretty thin. The only jeans I had kicking around the house were worn out so I figured I would buy new.

A will shoot one of the little side plates with a 3006 FMJ when I get a chance. I am lazy and don't want to have to redo the canvas a third time.

That Beez carrier is for "police style" concealable soft armor, idk if BLACS cut armor will fit. It has pockets for 10x12 plates, putting IIIA SAPI shaped soft armor in it would be dumb.

ty.

we're trying to find a good balance of weight and protection. she'll most likely have a spendy rig as ceramics are the way to go. front and back ceramics i've found as light as 14.5 lbs for the set. my shit is almost ten pounds heavier than that.

Just be careful. My lightweight lvl IV ceramic plates require IIIa soft armor behind them. Make sure what you get is standalone, or get her a vest, too.

found some standalone for big dollars. worth it given the weight savings and protection afforded though. i am sure i can find them for under $200 but that seemed to be the price point they were at.

Just pulled it apart and wow is that canvas inner layer toast. Plate looks good. 5 scars where the bullets hit but not much damage. With the tape off I can tell on the back where the bullets hit but I cant see any deformation.

Send me a PM and I can give you a place fairly local for a set of plates under 350.. NIJ 0101.05 rated
