I'm looking for a dying sport - bowling pin shooting.

Does anyone know any clubs, indoor or outdoor, that conduct pin shooting matches in MA, NH, ME, VT, RI, or CT?

Here are the ones that I am aware of:

Nenameseck, Ware, MA

MRA, Woburn, MA

Worcester Pistol & Rifle Club (MA)

Lawrence Rod & Gun Club (MA)

Georgetown R&G (MA)

Chester R&G (NH)

Country Pond (NH)

Any others out there?

Otasan,
You got a schedule for any of the clubs you listed? I'd like to consider checking them out. Are they shooting thru the winter?
-Cuz.

Winchendon R&G over the summer. Last Sunday morning of the month I think.

I think I heard Gardner Rifle and Pistol does .22 match with bowling pin heads over the winter, but I haven't seen anything.

Also, Lunenburg does plate shoots in the summer.

I love pin shooting, I hardly ever do it but I really do like it. I gotta check some of these places out.

As Matt mentioned, Winchendon R+G does it. basically theres a series
of clubs in central MA that runs them. When I get the schedules I
will post the dates on here.

Westminster R+G, North Leominster, Winchendon all rotate in a
cycle from like march thru october. The schedules get printed in the
spring sometime. The first 2007 shoot in the area will most likely be at
Winchendon. This year's was VERY cold.

North Leominster this year didn't start till about halfway through the
season and was plagued by heavy rain at least two sundays in a
row. (Generally speaking light rain isnt an issue, but usually a
torrential downpour will scare most of the shooters away, and then they
call it off. )

Lunenburg sportsmens also does them on occasion, but it's a less
competitive, cheaper format. I don't mind it though, it's still
fun! (Format is "fun shoot" $5 shoot all day type deal).

All the shoots typically start at 10 AM and end at/around 2 pm. There
are plenty of people though that show up, shoot a few relays and
then leave, though.

The format is usually the following- 8 man relays at a cost of
$3 per relay, winner of relay gets $5 and a penalty pin on the next
relay. 2nd place winner usually gets a freebie. (FWIW, Winchendon
and North Leominster typically stop at 6 pins max, Westminster will
go up to EIGHT if you're really good!) All shooters load 6 rnds per
magazine, to keep parity with the wheelguns. At westminster if
you're badass enough to get 7 pins they'll usually let you load 7
rounds if you're using an auto. (I only know two shooters who can
do this with any amount of frequency, though). Shooters are usually
paired off according to ability, and sometimes in a simply
random manner. If you're a newbie make sure to tell the match
director/range officer and they'll help you out and place you against
other newbies, if possible.

Some places also run steel pin plate racks, but this only happened at
Lunenburg this year. Otherwise it's wood pins on plywood tables at
a 25 feet centerline. Leave the 9mms and .38s at home. Anything
less than a stout .40 S+W or a .357 mag running 158gr bullets is
essentially worthless. The perennial favorites are .45 ACP and
.44 SPL/Magnum. (Probably 90% of the shooters run either one or
both of these calibers). Even a powder-puff .45 ACP SWC
load is a better deal than anything that doesn't begin with a "4".

Also note- there are no limits to what kind of gun you can use, as
long as it's a handgun. Optics, compensators, all those goodies
are welcome. I witnessed a pin match between two guys with TC
Contenders once! (made it interesting, one shot at a time!)

FWIW, Winchendon's shoot typically draws the most people, for
whatever reason. This has its ups and downs. If it's loaded
up, and you're losing, it takes FOREVER and a day between when you
get to shoot again.

Some other notes: most of the clubs are spotty about serving
food. Westminster always has hotdogs and sodas
availiable, and free coffee. The others are on/off. Sometimes
North Leominster will have it's kitchen open for lunch and the like, and
Winchendon will have a guy bring down a grill and cook burgers. Problem
is none of this is done with any regularity, so if being hungry drives you
nuts, I would have breakfast beforehand or bring your own
lunch.

Another note- during most of the season it is a wise idea to
bring bug spray, especially to Westminster and Winchendon.

Thanks so very much for your comprehensive post. The matches sound most interesting.

It is going to be a long winter!

Otasan,

A google search will lead you to their web sites.

I'd pass on Lawrence if I were you; they are xenophobic.

Haverhill Hound Rod & Gun has pin shoots, but I think their schedule is all done now for the winter. You can check the web site out for scheduled shoots - www.hhrg.com.

Also, if it's not too far a drive for you - Bay State Arms (formly Bob's Tactical) in Salisbury, MA will be starting weekly (I do believe) pin shoots after the 1st of the year. Their number is 978-465-5561 - you can call and find out more info.

I do steel plates at DF&G wednesday nights 3 seasons a year , and Sat or Sun am's all year. Informal fun shoots , not generally contests - though the twin range setup encourages matched pair racing.

Not a pin , but similar and fun. No magnums.

What is DF&G?

Thank you.

I think he's talking about Danvers Fish & Game.

Don't know what their ranges are like, but they do an awesome game supper every January.

Come out and join in on the fun in this indoor pin shoot.

Help me celebrate my return to pin-shooting after an involuntary 18-month layoff!

Read their description carefully, especially about lead bullets only.

Otasan, looks like Mortis & I will be joining you tomorrow. Look for the guy with a 1911 with Masonic grips on it.

See you then.

So Mortis & I went to Nenameseck in Ware for the pin shoot this morning. Very interesting!

There were 6 classes - Rimfire Revolver, Semiauto & Open and Big Bore Revolver, Semi & Open. Rimfire was shot at candlepins, Big Bore at tenpins. Almost got into the money in the bigbore semi; my last pin got knocked over before the other guy's but took more time to clear the table and hit the floor. [crying]

First time Mortis has been shooting in 10 years; he did pretty good for someone that "rusty"! (yeah, I'm evil... I'm pushing him to get his LTC. [devil])

Met Otasan... all I'll say is that any bowling pin that values it's life shouldn't piss him off. He's GOOD.

And it turns out that Nenamaseck alternates pin shoots with indoor IDPA. I don't think that today was my last time out there... since Mortis lives out in that neck of the woods, I'll definitely be going out there again to go shooting.

Great little event there today. It was a safe and well-run shooting match. The pins were ultra-heavy, but that can be part of the challenge. My PF250 .44 magnum loads were just about right, and my PF214 .45ACP loads were just barely adequate out of my stock M1911A1.

I went to Worcester Rifle and Pistol Club over in W. Boyleston, MA for a little man-on-man outdoor pin shooting, and the pins there were even more shot-up! The candlepins were chewed up to the max! It was a great event, also. Nice 50 degrees and sunny.

So, now I will spend this Winter casting a lot more bullets for the 2007 pin-shooting season.

Every shot is the sound of FREEDOM!

Nenameseck - Palmer, MA

Our pin shoots are the second Sunday of every month at 9am. Our "combat" shoots (IDPA style) are the fourth Sunday. Sometimes this varies a bit, so check the online schedule at www.nenameseck.com

We shoot indoors during the winter months and the rule is lead ammo only due to our soft steel backstop. The rest of the year we shoot outside and jacketed ammo is OK.

Norm Bilodeau runs the pin shoots, his number is 413-967-3797 if anyone has questions.

Does anyone ever do pin shoots with rifles? I'm guessing the pins wouldn't last too long, but it'd be fun!

I heard of at least one club (Grafton?) that has done it with shotguns, at a
much further distance than normal pin shooting.

Pins indoors

Could someone tell me about that indoor range in MA near the NH border along I-95 that was mentioning indoor pin shooting sometime after the new year?

Thank you.

That's Bay State Arms (formerly Bob's Tactical). I'm not sure when they're planning on starting, but you can call and ask. 978-465-5561 Call late afternoon/early evening and ask for Jack - tell him Lynne told you to call.

255gr SWC .452

I have found a few sources for these great pin-killing bullets. PM me for the links.

They are doing pin shooting @ MRA again, next shoot is on the 19th. I doesn't seem very well advertised. Safety meeting is at 6:45 I think.
