I just put in an order for an M1 Field Grade and some ammunition.

I've been waffling about whether to get an M14 or Garand, but today it came to me that the Garand costs 1/3 of what the cheapest M14 (M1A) goes for, and the deals from the CMP might dry up and then I would kick myself.

One thing I'd like to confirm, I've read that you should only shoot military surplus ammo, and that commercial hunting loads will damage the action. Is that always true, or are the modern commercial loads made that are safe to shoot in the M1?

It has to do with high pressure loads and the M1's gas system.
Surplus ammo is best because its loaded to military specs but you can always use low pressured 30-06 if you run low.

Congrats on the Garand! I can't answer the question as to whether using modern ammo will hurt it, but if you ordered the Garand through the CMP order some of their surplus ammo as well. They have great ammo and it's at a price that is hard to beat. It's all I shoot out of my Garand.
