Authorities on Friday surrounded a deep woods bunker that they say belongs to a gun-toting survivalist suspected of killing his wife and daughter nearly a week ago.

Dozens of police officers surrounded the underground bunker in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle, after they pumped gas into the structure and saw movement inside.

Authorities said the bunker belongs to 41-year-old Peter A. Keller, who was described in court records as a loner who collected guns and had a survivalist mentality. They were waiting to see if the person in the bunker would surrender on his own.

Could of just said a reclusive survivalist. No need to paint gun owners or survivalists in negative light. But wait, it's the media...

If he were just reclusive, not gun-toting, survivalist, he'd have never shot his wife and daughter. It's the guns that make reclusive survivalists shoot their wives and daughters. When will you people get a clue? Without guns, homicidal psychopaths can only make their wives vanish, hatchet their sons and blow their houses up, which lends itself to a much safer society.

"It's a very extreme tactical situation"

lol, just like they always hoped for.

Tactical teams fired the first round of tear gas into the bunker near the Rattlesnake Ridge trail around 2 p.m. Friday, but Keller did not surrender. Police said the bunker appears to be well fortified and Keller is likely wearing a gas mask.

Uh, duh.... Any "survivalist" worth their salt won't be fazed by tear gas...

Fortunately there were only a handful of casualties;

"SWAT teams spent a grueling seven hours on the mountainside Friday morning, virtually crawling over dangerously steep terrain slick with mud from recent rains, before they found the bunker. A number of officers were treated intravenously for dehydration, and one broke his ankle, said sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said.

After long shifts, the officers appeared exhausted, their faces smeared with camouflage paint, as they rode down the mountain in sport-utility vehicles or armored carriers to be replaced by fresher teams"

But all is well, they were given a ride home.

But what if he was really a gun toting survivalist? And why is that a negative light? Agreed that the media is often inaccurate and sensationalist when it comes to guns, but the description may in fact be (and seems to be) accurate.

This guy was a nut bag. And a killer. He may have had untreated psychological issues but that is moot at this point.

If he killed his wife and child, they should have pumped about 200 gallons of gas down the tunnel and burned him out.

We should probably get all the details of the murder of his wife and child before we nuke him from orbit.

Yeah, this is why we are where we are...

Looks bad for the guy, but we shouldn't go around Janet Reno'ing people gleefully without due process.

Doesn't sound like that happened here btw, there was a bit of a show, but in the end it sounds like they went to arrest the guy with some pretty reasonable suspicion and he decided to make it a party...

So far, other than playing dress up it sounds like the PD did the right thing.

I want some details on the bunker.

I don't. They "saw movement" inside and were able to pump gas into the structure...

On second thought, I *would* like to see it for ideas *not* to incorporate.

It was probably an earth sheltered cabin, not an "underground bunker".

And they saw lights going on and off. He should have drawn the blinds.
