Name that tune!

Okay, I'll play here's one for you....I was visiting the graveyard, the endless rows of white
Where they buried all the soldiers, who ever took up arms to fight

Here's an easy one -

"Saw the ghost of Elvis,
Down on Union avenue.

Followed him up to gates of Graceland,
And, I watched him walk right through..."

...Now security they did not see him, they just hovered 'round his tomb.

There's a pretty little thing, waitin' on the King,

Down in the jungle room!

I was walking in Memphis,

Walkin' with my feet 10 feet off of Bealle...

For those CW fans...

"I remember down in Houston, we were puttin on a show
When a cowboy in the back got up and yelled "Ah ha Joe!"

That's "Cotton-eyed Joe" and it's Alabama, Gotta have a fiddle in the band.

"He said we luv what yer doing, now boys don't get us wrong,
There's just sumthin missin in your song.

If you're gonna play in Texas, ya gotta have a fiddle in the band,
That lead guitar is hot, but not for a Loosianna man...."

Give the man a cupie doll! :D

That's close, but when Alabama does it, it's "Cotton-Eyed Joe".

I remember down in Houston, we were puttin on a show
When a cowboy in the back stood up and yelled, "Cotton-Eyed Joe"
He said, "We love what you're doin', boys don't get us wrong
There's just somethin' missin' in your song"
If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band
That lead guitar is hot but not for "Louisiana Man"
So rosin up that bow for "Faded Love" and let's all dance
If you're gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band

How about this one?

"I used to spend my nights. love, in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I've known"

My liberal mom contributes this one:

"Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red white and blue"

Hint: It was used on occasion as an unofficial national anthem in competition with "Hail, Columbia" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" until the latter's formal adoption as the national anthem of the United States in 1931.

Damn...it's on the tip of my tongue... heard it a number of years ago, and that stupid bell is ringing, but I can't get it....

I just showed this page to my mother and thought I'd share it. It's commentary about the Star Spangled Banner by Isaac Asimov, one of the greatest science fiction authors who ever lived, and a fierce patriot (he was born in Russia but emigrated with his parents to the US)

http://www.purewatergazette.net/asimov.htm

Thank you, Ross. I have to print that out.

Easy. Columbia the Gem of the Ocean

O Columbia! the gem of the ocean,
The home of the brave and the free,
The shrine of each patriot's devotion,
A world offers homage to thee;
Thy mandates make heroes assemble,
When Liberty's form stands in view;
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
When borne by the red, white, and blue,
Thy banners make tyranny tremble,
When borne by the red, white and blue.

(Knew it instantly, but I admit that I looked up the complete lyrics.)

All right, then... let's kick up the tempo a little:

''Cause we'll all stick together, and you can take that to the bank. That's the cowboys and the hippies, and the rebels and the yanks."

Since I'm not having any luck stumping y'all with OLD patriotic songs!

Ross

And after all the chatter you actually thought Charlie Daniels would do the trick? [wink] [wink] I suspect that you'd have a much better shot with something from Lawrence Welk.

From the sound up in Long Island out to San Francisco Bay
And ev'ry thing that's in between them is our home
And we may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone
Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank.
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks.
You just go and lay your head on a Pittsburgh Steeler fan
And I think you're gonna finally understand.

BTW, nobody's got the last one I posted so far, so I add a couple more lines:
"I used to spend my nights. love, in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I've known,
but you rescued me from reaching for the bottle
and you brought me back from being too far gone."

Ken, yours has me stumped. I would have to look it up to figure it out.

OK, I guess that means I must have been country when country wasn't cool. (I'm playing it off of a piece of vinal that's at least 20 years old.)

George [No Show] Jones
(and the primary reason he had that tendency)
Tennessee Whiskey

"I used to spend my nights. love, in a barroom
Liquor was the only love I've known,
but you rescued me from reaching for the bottle
and you brought me back from being too far gone.
Your as smooth as Tennessee whiskey
Your as sweet as strawberry wine
Your as warm as a glass of brandy
And I stay stoned on your love all the time."

Ken

"I remember circlin' the drive-in
pullin' up and turnin' down George Jones,
I remember when no one was lookin'
I was puttin' peanuts in my Coke."

I remember this one well. From the 'AM' days

Yeah, 20 years ago I was back listening to oldies, not country.

However... let's go a little farther back, shall we? I'm going to do this by memory, since my brother has the player piano roll that I learned this from...

It was on a Tuesday evening
at the home of Madge Malone.
There was quite a celebration
for her parents weren't home.
There were songs and witty stories,
and a bottle on the shelf
when up sprang Dan McGrew and said,
"Here's a song I wrote meself!"
"Sing it Dan!" "Righto, I will - "

Any guesses?

Here's one I always liked.

"...Then daddy came in to kiss his little man,
With gin on his breath and a Bible in his hand,
He talked about honor and things I should know,
Then he'd stagger a little as he went out the door..."

Ross's has me stumped too.

*evil grin*

Let's wait until Ken weighs in with his comments - I'm not putting anything by him!

But I'll post some more lyrics later this afternoon if I have the time and no one guesses it.

Ross

Tony's rings a bell but can remember either. Ross's doesn't sound familiar at all. You realise we're all dating ourselves too... [twisted]
