Got my first CMP Garand at the end of last week! I requested a WW2 serial number and got an early April 1945 Springfield Armory in Service Grade.
It seems to be all SA except for the trigger group which is all HRA. The barrel is a 1955 replacement and is 1+ TE and 1+ ME. Woohoo! And the wood appears to be GI with nice color and character. Also has the DoD cartouche on the left side and the P stamp on the base of the grip. No other cartouches seem to be present.
It looks like the receiver has the original finish on it too. It certainly doesn't look like it was refinished when they replaced the barrel. I've seen the re-parkerized ones and it doesn't look like them at all. Looks vintage to me. Is this more desirable with the original finish??
After I finished checking it all out, I started the task of stripping it down completely and cleaning out the cosmo from every nook and cranny. Thanks to NESer Xcom for the suggestion of wrapping the stock in towels and a trash bag and letting it bake on the radiator. That worked very nicely. Also cleaned and oiled every bit of metal in it and of course greased it where it wanted to be greased when I put it back together.
Took it to the range today and had a blast shooting it. What a great rifle! I was using the HXP ball ammo the CMP sells and it all functioned flawlessly. Not a single FTF or misfire in the several dozen rounds. And the sights were pretty close too. Just needed a click to the left and a click or two up and I was taking out the center at 50 yards from the bench. The one at the bottom left (yeah I mounted the target sideways) was a shot at the small target on the lower left from that distance. The shots at the main target started with the group at the lower right quadrant and moved to the center and up with sight adjustments.
I'm definitely hooked now! Time to order more ammo lol.
