Kittery Trading Post

Agree with you BlkHawk73

I agree with you BlkHawk73, I would not recommend Riley's either. They have one or two decent knowledgeable fellows that work in there, but most of the 'counter help' are not very knowledgeable or experienced and I have overheard the counter help frequently giving the classic sales pitches of trying to sell you what they have and not necessarily what you want. Riley's has become somewhat of a joke in NH frequently referred to as the K-Mart of Gun Shops.
I always enjoy walking around in the Kittery Trading Post and anytime I can get away for a half day, I take a trip out there, always a nice experience, nice facility to walk around in, nice selection of firearms and accessories, a lot of good places in the area for coffee and / or food.
The Smith & Wesson Retail Store in Springfield is certainly a great place to visit. Nice selection of firearms, nice accessories, very clean range on site that is available to the public to use, they even have available a wide assortment of their pistols to rent, extremely nice staff, definitely worth the ride.
If your not up for a trip to the coast or over to Springfield and are near Route 93, and want to talk to someone knowledgeable about firearms and will look out for your interest and treat you right, and will order exactly what you want, go to Manchester Firing Line, the owner, Jim McCloud is a great guy, him and his staff are knowledgeable, nice and respectful. He has a very interesting selection of firearms you can rent and shoot right there. I usually get my corbon ammo there also, his prices on ammo are good. I don't have stock in the place, just go there often and see how he and his staff treat people, the right way. He has a son in Iraq and recently coordinated filling a wish list for a unit deployed there. Just a good guy.

KTP

I love to stop into KTP asnd check out what is new and different. Their facility is second to nome.

The downside is that they are much higher on their pricing plus the added sales tax. This week their stock, as far as reloading and ammo, was way down. I've been told they will not restock until after their inventory is completed in Feb.

Riley's is just too convienent when I need an item or two and the prices on reloading supplies are much lower than KTP, but then they don't have to overhead. [shock]

Lareau's??

rscalzo,
As you are in Epping, closer to the coast then I am, do you know what ever happened to that gun shop that used to be a short ways before the circle before you go over the bridge to Kittery, not sure of the name of the road, maybe Route 4, my memory is that it was called Lareau's or something like that, stopped off there a few times going back probably 15 or 16 years, tried looking for it recently, could not find; any idea if they moved or just closed business?

Update on KTP

Took a ride out to Kittery Trading Post yesterday. It is better than ever. The firearms selection was great, both new and used, very large selection. I wanted to look at some HK compacts and a Springfield Armory pistol and compare them in size to some others; they had all in new and used. The counter person was just great, once he saw what types of guns I was looking at he kept bringing more similar ones out of the case for me to look at, very helpful found a few more brands that looked interesting.
Terrific and huge clothing section, picked up a good quality turtle neck for work at same price I pay for lesser quality at Walmart. If you go out that way, stop at Newick's in Dover if you like seafood, not fancy but excellent fresh seafood at reasonable prices.

Was there today putting some cash down on a HK P7 I'll be picking up in 2 weeks. Busy today. I'll gladly wait for a particular sales person though. Dennis is the best (older guy with glasses) Steven is good too and seems to know his stuff but not as well as Dennis. Grabbed some powder too. May be a scrtach sale on some new autoa as a shelf broke and sent an entire helf worth of brand new guns falling onto the bottom level. It was the case to the right of the new Glocks/Hks. New Ruger cases was pretty empty.

KTP

I was told when I asked a friend who worked at KTP a while back why many of the shelves were bare he said they do they inventory in Feb. and want as little as possible in the store to count. They reorder after that which puts the restocking sometime in April. [shock]

BlkHawk73,
What brand were the guns that fell with the shelf ?

Not 100% sure. The case to the right of the Glocks and Hk's (new). Might be the Sigs and other polymer models or the Taurus/Beretta stuff. Didn't care to check as I was busy with my own transaction and I wasn't loosing that P7. [wink]
Doubt you'll see much price deals on any damaged. They had one of the 50th Ann Blackhawks there a while back with a nie scratch unde the bbl and wouldn't budge on price of $469. They didn't seem to care that the scratch was even there. That one's gone and another is there now that looks like it too has a mark on the bbl. :x Same price.

Looked twice and was surpirsed to not see anything in this area about KTP.

Went up today and looked around and was surprised that it was not too busy. My usual Sunday visits are really crowded at KTP. We all know the way things work there but here's a few interesting observations. Crimson Trace laser Grip for Sig 229=$175 new. The counter man told me that KTP gets a huge deal on them. WWB .223 box of 20=$5.99, VALUE pack of .223 box of 40=$14.99. (???????) The holsters seem to be the same models they had back in January when I went up. A different counter man rolled his eyes when I politely asked him to open/clear the action on a rail model Sig before trying on a new Streamlight Laser/Flashlight combo for $310. I know the chances of finding a loaded weapon at a gun shop are essentially zero, but I think its a good idea to follow the practice of clearing an action EVERY TIME you handle the firearm. What do you think?

Chris

Good gunshop clerks always clear firearms and leave the action open before handing the gat across the counter.

The three fundamental gun safety rules also apply in gun shops -- these places are not somehow immune to ADs.

I hate Kittery Trading Post for more reasons than I have time to post. My last trip there I was looking for a tuckable IWB holster. The clerk told me there was no such thing. When I assured him I already had one, he called a co-worker over so they could both chuckle.

WRONG! It happens all the time.

They have had NDs there! The next time a dumb ass clerk rolls their eyes at you for expecting a common courtesy, ask to speak to a manager. Why do you think they have those chamber plugs in all the rifles? I have had morons point rifles at my head while I was there (not really the fault of KTP, but when I mentioned it to the clerk, he shrugged his shoulders and said he has gotten use to it) and was not all that impressed with the quality of the staff response. They need a big sign that says if you point firearms at people you will be escorted out.

I try and avoid the place unless I have somthing very specific that I need.

Kittery Trading Post.

Horrible experience & I will never go there ever again.

Extremely understaffed.. very crowded with customers there today, yet 3 lazy workers had time to sit on their ass & chew fat while the other 3 were bombarded with no less than 150 customers.

To make matters worse, the hundred year old man behind one counter spent over an hour on a single sale/transfer form for a single gun, and the teenage girl there had no clue whatsoever about anything at all relevant to firearms.

While I usually wait a bit anyways as they're often busy, I've never had a really bad experience there. Actually...I was there this morning myself and I must say the clerk that helped me was the nicest person I'd ever encountered there. You just gotta know which clerk to wait for. Some there are quite new.

Crowded & understaffed...so they should be overstaffed and chance not being busy? I have seen them VERY busy and at most waited an hour. There's plenty of inventory there to look at and pass the time. Also...if it's not a hadgun you're wanting to buy it's often easier to go down to the corner shotgun area as it's not really a busy part and that clerk isn't as backed up.

Another thought...It was also the weekend for Biddeford and with the weather being better than they forcast, more ppl got out and with the show and KTP being fairly close they likely got some customers from that. I do agree that weekends are busy. If ya gotta go on a weekend be there early.

Service is pretty dismal, the one gun I bought there took over an hour to transfer. It would have taken three if I let the plodding, knuckly-dragging schmuck deal with disassembly and packing the whole thing up in the original package.

Another bad thing is that all of the new guns have been well handled you will always find dings and scratches in new guns.

The only good thing is that for more expensive arms, they will drive it into NH to avoid the 5% Maine tax - nice service.

In the long run, better to buy from Mass dealer. Kittery doesn't have prices that are much better. Local purchase keeps the Mass dealers in business and you have a chance to build a relationship which is good when you need something special.
