I read the following quote online, but I'm not sure if it's true:

“Civilian ownership of any firearm in the US threatens the legitimate power monopoly of the state.” – United Nations Treaty on general small arms disarmament ratified and accepted July 7, 2001

I was trying to find the full text of the "United Nations Treaty on general small arms disarmament" from 2001, but I could not find it. Perhaps this is untruthful, or, the UN has deleted information about the treaty (and/or edited it) due to public outrage.

Well it is true that if civilians own guns it does make it more difficult for an out of control gov't to round up the malcontents who don't want to be slaves to the state.

Between the date (July 7, 2001) and the use of the oft-attributed-to-the-UN phrase " "Civilian ownership of firearms threatens the legitimate power monopoly of the state.", I call hoax.

The quote is generally attributed to the Arms Trade Treaty or the July 2001 report on Illicit Trade in Small Arms, but nothing even close appears in either document.

Overall the sentiment is true but the quotes and details wrong.

The UN has been trying to get the US into a Firearms Treaty which would ban ownership of most Semi-Autos. This supposedly would have to be ratified by the Senate

Nothing is in place yet, but every couple of years, you will see this topic come up.

Similarly, there were UN documents published specifically that did target ownership of any firearms by non-military / police and this was back in the late 90s / early 2000s. I have saved off PDFs buried somewhere. A great deal of what you hear reported is actually from white papers and sub-committee hearings out of the UN that are spoken as fact
