While many lawmakers debate various solutions -- restrictions on firearms, increased mental health funding, investment for youth -- ABC News recently talked to community leaders in Omaha, Nebraska, where officials have seen a steady drop in reported gun violence over the past 15 years.
Police and advocates attribute some of that to Omaha 360 -- an initiative started in 2009 by the Empowerment Network that involves nonprofits, neighborhood associations, churches and local law enforcement.
"It really did help to build a lot of trust between the police and the community and just amongst these various organizations," Scott Gray, the deputy chief of the Omaha Police Department, told ABC News. "Empowerment Network is the hub, because it kind of pulls together all of these different organizations that by themselves tend to not stay connected and more effective."...

Because keeping the streets crime free doesn't help anyone in govt.

It doesn't help the PoPo. They need to justify their expenses.

It doesn't help the justice system - need to keep those lawyers and judges working.

It doesn't help the politician - if there is no crime, what will people focus on? ... what problems can the politician help create and then promise to "solve"?

I say, you do a violent crime with a firearm, and your a felon, you get to choose: amputation of your trigger finger, or 20 yrs in the slammer. Do it again, lose your other finger, and get automatic 20 yrs. But no, the libs would scream inhuman !!!! While the victims families are trying to pull themselves together........Realistically, all we need to do is ENFORCE the laws already on the books. But nooooooo. The biggest problem with inner city crime are the residents, bring your kids up right. Long prison sentences for repeat felony offenses, is a start. The residents need to step up and grab the bull by the horn.
