HK VP9

Cant believe were 3 pages in on A hk thread and a glock guy hasn't explained why glocks are the best device ever built. [smile]

I'm sort of a "Glock guy" and I would be willing to try one of these guns out, even if I sort of point it at the ground like I do with half of HKs product line. [laugh] I carried HKs for years.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks like some of the newer Walthers? Which is ironic as Walther started using the long slide release levers.

Yeah when I saw the slide stop/release the first thing I thought of was a P99/SW99.

Does HK produce any pistols that use a Western-style magazine release? The European trigger guard release is my only real hang-up on their guns.

I have a USPc (used to have 2). I also really do not like the HK mag release. Messing about near the trigger when I'm not trying to pull the trigger is contraindicated.

The MA compliant version is likely to suck with a 10lb DAO trigger, if there ever even is one. Of course that doesn't preclude getting a free state one but its probably not going to be $600 by the time one gets it. Most HK's are complicated little buggers, too. Its probably not as easy to fiddle with that trigger as say an M&P.

you're using the wrong finger then, you should be using your shooting hand thumb to drop the mag. Its a pretty intuitive motion once you fire thru a few mags worth and your thumb gets nowhere near the trigger compared to your index finger.

This is one of those things that I never really had trouble with on an HK, they all worked pretty well for me like that... The guns had other flaws, but I guess this is one of those mileage may vary things.

Worst mag release ever though is the Walther PPS. What a hunk of dog meat that release is... gun would have been better off with a european heel release than that crap.

It's too far away to easily reach with my strong hand thumb. And I still don't like operating something that close to the trigger when I don't want to fire the gun.

It is personal taste. I find it too far to easily reach with my right hand thumb. I can push it with my trigger finger, but like I said, I don't like doing that.

Of course, then there is the whole HK USP POS trigger, but that is another kettle of fish...

From Larry Vickers Facebook.

As promised here are my first impressions of the HK VP9 - this is a non firing review as I have not gotten to the range with it yet; here goes-
1) Overall fit and finish is excellent as you would expect from HK
2) It has the same style of side panels and backstrap inserts as the P30 so a shooter can customize the grip to their hand - kudos to HK for that as options are good
... 3) The sights are the same as the P30 and HK45 series; perfectly usable and now easily swapped out for other options - far superior in every way to the hideous Glock plastic sights and even the plastic Walther PPQ sights
4) mags are interchangeable with P30 mags
5) the VP9 has a P30 style mag release and ambi slide releases that are similar to the P30 - I like the mag release and drop the mag with my trigger finger and the VP9 slide release is perfectly usable but I would personally prefer a bit more ledge as I release the slide with the support hand thumb; as is it is much better than the standard Glock slide release but I prefer the more pronounced ledge of the PPQ slide release - however I do prefer the P30/VP9 mag release over the Walther euro paddle style
6) the slide chargers appear to be a polymer U shaped piece that is under the rear sight - they work as advertised and help with slide charging. However I'm not sure they would answer the mail for one handed manipulation so if that is a big deal to you look at a replacement rear sight with a ledge design
7) okay now the biggie; trigger characteristics- my buddy Robbie Reidsma at HK gave me the rundown on the trigger a few weeks ago and I found he was spot on; it breaks a bit heavier than the PPQ but overall has a somewhat better feel in terms of length of pull, take up, overtravel and reset. All this is subjective of course but it is very comparable to the PPQ in trigger feel ( I actually like it better ) and is miles above a Glock trigger - no comparison. Well done HK as my VP9 has the best trigger on an HK pistol since since the P7 ( the trigger guard has the groove in it like the P30 and HK45 but I believe the trigger design will help prevent trigger finger bite which bothers many shooters including myself - live fire will tell the tale )
8) my only real complaint about the VP9 is it has a higher bore line over the backstrap/grip vs a Glock or PPQ - not dramatically more than the PPQ but the HK is the lowest of the 3 - this may or may not be a big deal to you but you need to be aware of it
Overall I am very impressed with the HK VP9 thus far and feel this pistol at the price it is going to sell at in your LGS ( $719 MSRP) is going to make it a very serious contender for all around best out of the box striker fired handgun

All you glock guys read that. Miles above a glock trigger with a street price pretty much the same as glock.

Doesn't mean anything till people actually get the guns and start beating the piss out of them. They also need to make more than one version, they need one with a diet too.

I also bet that even after the dust settles and they make a version of the pistol with a diet, they still won't be able to beat the G19/G23 in size/capacity ratio. The Caracal came pretty close but that unfortunately ended in failure.

Reminds me of my Walther P99 I bought in 2001, interchangable backstrap, striker design, same indicators, and ambi mag release levers.

Only differences are that it looks like it has my Springfield XDM trigger safety (sounds like they have that on Glock as well), it has a steal recoil spring rod (factory was plastic on P99 back in the day, I replaced with a steal one). Also, I don't see a striker decocker button like the P99 does, which allows you to go from SA to DA on the first round in the chamber (little more safety), but I do like this gun's ambi-slide release lever. I'm a lefty, so I have gotten used to having to fold my thumb over to the other side of the gun to release the slide, which delays aiming and firing.

I do like the idea of the "cocking ears". but would have to experience it to know for sure.

Hopefully the VP9 will be made MA compliant by 2018.

Some will be here a week or less after they show up on gunbroker, whether martha likes it or not. Just ask walter... he can get you a toe, by 3 pm, with nail polish.... a VP9 should be easy. [rofl]
