Sorry for the long post, I didnt think it was going to be this long.

Hey everyone! Im new here, have shot guns all my life and now I want to purchase my first! Im looking for a pistol, under 300$. I've been looking online, and I went to a few gunshops today... the guns look so much differant in real life.

At the first gunshop they guy was showing me some .22's. I was looking at a P22, seemed like a nice little gun. I didnt get to hold any and didnt get too much info there... Im new to this so I dont know how it works.

I went to the second gunshop, they didnt have as big of a selection but he was handing me all the guns and telling me about them... I liked that so I could get a feel of them. There prices seemed lower and there was a scattered selection, and alot of used guns. The first gun he showed me was a .45 pistol for $350 i believe. I really liked the feel of it, I dont remember who made it but it was nice looking. After that he showed me a .38 revolver, really nice but it was a little too much for me. I then started looking at some .22's, a used small gun with a wooden handle for around 200 but he suggested a new .22 that was $269. He said it would be better for target practice and you could put a scope on it.

Just looking for some advice and suggestions if anyone could add some input. I really liked the .45 and the small older .22.

Welcome to the forum. Spend some time reading the Stickies at the top of each forum and you will learn a lot about our gun laws, getting a LTC, etc.

As for what to buy, this is a topic that comes up often. A short search here led me to the following threads that you should read thru.

Yes, i have shot rifles. I grew up shooting little .22's, a .22 hornet, and a 12 gauge. I havent really shot pistols except for a little .22. And I havent ever really been in a gunshop except Walmart walking by. The guns I am looking at I have never seen in person, and now I am seeing them like the P22... looks much better in person.

Thanks, I have been reading and I just read all those threads. Seems like other than a .22 people like 9mm as a starter pistol. I just want something a little more exciting than a .22, but a I wouldnt mind owning one at all... nothing against them.

My philosophy:

You can never own too many .22s.

I've been shooting all my life as well. And I can't even tell you how many .22s I have. They are VERY exciting. They are wicked accurate, cheap to shoot, and a GREAT caliber to get started with... You can get down all the good habbits and shoot until you can't take it anymore for VERY short money.

Don't knock them until you have them. The best plinking gun I think that you'll ever own.

This might seem like a dumb question, but, do you have a license? If so,
what class is it?

I have a couple of older S&W .38 caliber handguns that I am thinking of selling
for short money. If you think that would interest you, let me know.

No I dont have any license yet.

I have nothing against .22's. I grew up shooting beer cans with them, and thats part of the reason I want something differant. They seem appealing because of thier cheap ammo. I also like the .38 I held. I read you can use .357 ammo in them for a more powerful shot?

Zero, can I recommend that you take the safety course first before trying to decide what to buy? It should teach you a lot of stuff that you will need to know. A quick search here will net you many places to take it. Or you could just go to www.goal.org.
