GOAL and the Outdoor Message - What the hell?

Let me get this straight. I’m paying roughly ¼ of my Goal dues, per year, for a publication that I don’t read and which could probably be done much easier and cheaper with e-mail. The publication isn’t actually produced by GOAL.

Someone enlighten me. Who is Mike Yacino and why did GOAL bid out the job for the publishing?

Edit: Just googled this. "Yacino served as executive director of the Gun Owners’ Action League from 1977 to 2005."

The power of multiplication. When you have a large membership, the group collecting the dues might be laughing all the way to the bank

For example, How many members does NES have? 200, 300? Multiply that number by $21 a year and somebody gets an all expense paid trip to Aruba every winter.

Web hosting and vBulletin software might cost $40/year.

No offense.

I know! We don't spend a second on it either! It's like free money!

Thanks for contributi... Oh. Never mind.

There's nothing wrong with capitalism. Having said that, the best case would be one where GOAL members are informed of the relationship between GOAL and The Outdoor Message and can therefore decide if that relationship is one they want to fund. From this thread, it seems that relationship is not fully understood by at least some members right now.

Best case scenario would have people do their due diligence before giving money or support. Not everyone is going to... I didn't.

Is Goal's money better spent elsewhere?... they don't seem to think so.

Just for the record JW, the expenses ere are MUCH higher than you've outlined.

Think it through.

ETA: And they're none of anybody's business but the owner's.

The difference is that you have a choice - pay or not - which I see you don't.

That's it right there.

I don't even read the OM and I opted out from receiving it a while ago. I would rather my money go to GOAL.

Wow! 500 x $21 = $10,500 per year.

There is NO WAY this website (plus a couple free guns) costs that much.

Nice revenue stream. [thinking]

So what? NES doesn't claim to saving your freaking God given rights from the government you keep electing to yourself either. Way to deflect the issue.

PS- Who's giving me my $20 for this?

I'm guessing though that $8 is still going to the Outdoor Message whether you opt out of receiving it or not.

Well, NES is on a dedicated server. So Derek has to pay rent for the server every month. Plus bandwidth. I'm willing to bet that the figures involved are a lot more than you think. My company pays our datacenter ~$1200 per month for the 16 Mb of dedicated bandwidth that we require at any given time. That's using our servers, by the way, and hosting space and power consumption is not included in that cost. Now, I don't know how many Mb of bandwidth NES requires at peak time, or what the cost to rent the server is, but I'm sure it's substantial, especially if there is an SLA involved. Derek even had to ramp up the ads a bit when we migrated just to offset the cost.

Not only that, but NES is not a charity. It is not an organization fighting for our rights, per se. It is a community. We are all here because we want to be, and we don't pay for our memberships based on the idea that gun rights are going to somehow get better recognized because of it.

don't get out of mom's basement all that often, do you?

that's the biggest downside to the internet. there's always some retard who thinks they know shit from stuff they googled posting in threads like they're an expert. and there are 500 other retards who follow him.

I thought GOAL was it's members? I don't recall being asked. Maybe I should be asked.

Well the board represents your interests.. I only joined recently, but dont they hold elections? Maybe a ballot question is in order to research how the money could be spent better such as pro gun commercials or billboards.

Can't you just opt out of the newsletter when you re-up yor dues?

Does that mean I can decrease my dues by the cost of the newsletter? Does GOAL allow that option? If so, I'll take it. I'd rather the difference go toward preserving my rights in this state, not overpaying for a newsletter which might get used as firestarter come winter.

That's an excellent idea.

If you do opt will GOAL keep that $8 or are they contracted to pay the fee anyway? I'd opt out and keep the money in house, myself.

Not sure, you would have to ask GOAL.

I would assume that The Outdoor Message bills GOAL based on how many subscriptions are mailed out, so hopefully GOAL keeps the extra cash.

Wow! This just made me fall off my chair. How soon people forget. [thinking]

Weren't you here?

If I knew, I wouldn't have asked. Maybe somebody else can fill me in.

I found out about the 1998 shit when I went to buy slugs for hunting season and my FID was no good. That's when I got 'involved'. What was Yacino's involvement?

If Derek is making money because of him, we should commend him for being a good businessman, He found a need, filled it and is hopefully making cash off it.
That's what we do in America.

Absolutely! I am on this site several times a day, it's well worth the $21/year for membership. And $8 a year for the Outdoor Message is pretty reasonable too. I am a bit shocked to find that people on this list are objecting to a guy making some money providing a service. And you call ME a socialist!
