Ft Hood Shooter is still alive

I've been following the writing of Daniel Pipes for a while. He has documented this before, he dubbed it "sudden jihad syndrome"

http://www.danielpipes.org/3450/sudden-jihad-syndrome-in-north-carolina

This is what I have dubbed the Sudden Jihad Syndrome, whereby normal-appearing Muslims abruptly become violent. It has the awful but legitimate consequence of casting suspicion on all Muslims. Who knows whence the next jihadi? How can one be confident a law-abiding Muslim will not suddenly erupt in a homicidal rage? Yes, of course, their numbers are very small, but they are disproportionately much higher than among non-Muslims.

This syndrome helps explain the fear of Islam and mistrust of Muslims that polls have shown on the rise since September 11, 2001.

The Muslim response of denouncing these views as bias, as the "new anti-Semitism," or "Islamophobia" is as baseless as accusing anti-Nazis of "Germanophobia" or anti-Communists of "Russophobia." Instead of presenting themselves as victims, Muslims should address this fear by developing a moderate, modern, and good-neighborly version of Islam that rejects radical Islam, jihad, and the subordination of "infidels."

Why not?

Who the F is to blame for setting up a killing field like that? WHO?

Unarmed Victim Zones are awful and maybe this will be a nail in their coffin. But having just found at about this event, I'm mostly angry at the dirtbag who did the shooting.

It doesn't sound like this was very "sudden." It sounds like the guy was giving off warning signs like a three-alarm fire but just got shuffled along to be someone else's problem. Reminds me of Gavin De Becker's The Gift of Fear in which he points out that "he just snapped" is really a long process with many signs people choose to ignore.

US bases will never have armed off duty soldiers on them. you guys should get used to that right now and stop with the "well if they did.."; well they wont, and they never will. there are a lot of reasons, some good some bad that soldiers arent allowed to carry. weapons and ammo are highly secured while on post.

I can think of an instance when i was stationed at Fort Knox where a soldier went into the PX, bought a handgun and tried to bring it into the barracks. the MPs somehow knew that this soldier had purchased this handgun and the only place to store it was his barracks. The MPs had him pulled over and the weapon confiscated literaly before he could make the 1.25 mile ride back to the barracks.

Also, when i was active duty, i specifically remember people talking about Fort Hood, and how it was the ghetto of the US Army's continental bases; not that it has anything to do with this shooting, but the people ive spoken to say it has a odd amount of crime and gang activity for a post.

Not having military experience I am shocked at how vulnerable and defenseless this military base was. Like many, I just assumed a U.S. military base would be extremely well defended. I can't believe, right now, in Massachusetts, I am better armed than our troops on base. A party at Derek's would have been infinitely more difficult to hit than the area this POS targeted at Fort Hood. Unbelievable. Those poor people. [sad2]

"Soldiers not carry weapons."

"This is our home."

Just saw that at the press conference 1 minute ago.

I carry a weapon at my home. Even if I am sitting here in my underwear. [grin]

All the more reason to let them carry.

I don't care where you are. The enemy is all around you.

Yeah. A jihadist with a handgun shouldn't be able to do this.

+1.... it is pretty sad when a nipplehead with 2 handguns can kill 12 people and none of them are allowed to shoot back- at an installation of one of the most powerful armies in the world.

An Army psychiatrist who reportedly feared an impending war deployment is in custody as the sole suspect in a shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas that left 12 dead and at least 30 wounded, an Army official said Thursday night.

The news that the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, was alive and in stable condition came as a sudden reversal of early reports that the gunman was among the dead.

"I would say his death is not imminent," Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said. Col. Ben Danner said the suspect was shot at least four times.

Two other soldiers who were taken into custody for questioning were later released, Cone said. A female first responder who shot at Hasan also survived, contrary to earlier reports that she had died.

The rampage was believed to be the deadliest at a U.S. military base in history. The exact motive wasn't clear, though Hasan, a Virginia native and a Muslim, reportedly was against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and had been the target of harassment for his ethnicity.

Federal law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that Hasan had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats. The officials said they are still trying to confirm that he was the author.

One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates homicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.

"To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause," said the Internet posting. "Scholars have paralled (sic) this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers."

They say an official investigation was not opened.

Hasan was working with soldiers at Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood after being transferred in July from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he had worked for six years before recently receiving a poor review.

Cone said the shooter used two guns, including a semi-automatic weapon. He added there was no indication they were military weapons.

The shooting took place 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the post's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers undergo medical screening before being deployed or after returning from overseas.

"We have a terrible, tragic situation here," said Cone. "Soldiers, family members and the civilians that work here are absolutely devastated."

Cone said the injuries "vary significantly" among the victims wounded in the shooting.

The shooter's cousin, Nader Hasan, told Fox News that their family is in shock.

"We are trying to make sense of all this," Nader Hasan said. "He wasn't even someone who enjoyed going to the firing range."

He said his cousin, who was born and raised in Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech University, turned against the wars after hearing the stories of those who came back from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Nader Hasan said his cousin, who was raised a Muslim, wanted to go into the military against his parent's wishes — but was taunted by others after the terror attacks of Sept. 11.

A former neighbor of Hasan's in Silver Spring, Md., told Fox News he lived there for two years with his brother and had the word "Allah" on the door.

She said the FBI interviewed her Thursday afternoon, adding she used to see a woman and a 3-year-old girl coming and going.

Authorities provided little information Thursday about the victims of the rampage at Fort Hood.

George Stratton's son, George Stratton III, was five feet away from the shooter at the Soldier Readiness Center and suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder.

"He said he was there doing medical stuff and all of a sudden someone came through the door, walked behind the desk and just started shooting," Stratton told FoxNews.com.

He said about 15 rounds went off and people started dropping to the floor.

"He peaked up over the desk and that's when he was shot in the shoulder, and he just went down again. He said he saw one of his NCOs get badly shot," Stratton told FoxNews.com after talking to his son in the hospital. "After he got shot he told me, 'Dad, I got up, held my arm and took off running.'"

Stratton said his son was expected to be deployed to Afghanistan in January after going to basic training exactly a year ago.

"It's pretty hard to believe something like this happened," Stratton told FoxNews.com. "I think he's probably had his fill of war already."

President Obama called the shooting a "horrific outburst of violence" on members of the nation's armed forces. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil," he said

Obama said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.

A spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations said they don't know anything about Hasan, and condemned the shooting at Fort Hood.

The group issued a statement calling the shooting as a "cowardly attack." They say no political or religious ideology could ever justify or excuse such violence.

The base and area schools were on lockdown after the mass shooting, and all those on the Army post were asked to gather for a head count, thought the lockdown was lifted Thursday night.

Covering 339 square miles, Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. Home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year, the sprawling base is located halfway between Austin and Waco.

FoxNews.com's Michelle Maskaly and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Glad he's alive. I hope he gets the best of medical care so as to be able to fully experience his ultimate execution, preferably a slow, painful one. One means that appeals to me would be by single shots starting at the extremities and working in from a firing squad with black powder rifles using pig-lard lubed bullets. What he's done is truly despicable.

I was at Ft Hood today for a meeting. The building we were in was a about two miles from the location. We were in lock-down for 5 hours after the shootings, then it took +2 hours to get off post after lock-down was lifted. Imagine +10K people trying to leave a small city through five or six gates at one time. Tonight I'm in Austin and will catch a flight home tomorrow morning. What a day.

Can someone with military experience explain why at the very least, COs cannot carry weapons? Why in the HELL is a military base Gun Free? If you have been trained, there is no reason why you cannot carry.

I finally hope the sheepole realize how helpful a "Gun Free Zone" is to a maniac jihadist terrorist bastard. This is a complete waste of lives and could have been avoided. [sad2]

So this worthless scumbag's name is Malik Nadal Hasan .

Go figure. [rolleyes]

I'm surprised he didn't conduct this attack with a suicide vest. That's the usual way they do it.

It's going to be real interesting how Obama and the Statists are going to not waste this crisis. On the one hand, it's a wet dream of painting our military as domestic terrorists for them, but on the other, being he's a Muslim, they're going to have to tread carefully not to offend their overlords talking about it.

Its due to the policies in place and commander's guidance. If people were to carry on a military installation, they would have to carry issued weapons that they have qualified with. Further they couldnt carry them in their personally owned vehicles, only ones owned by the government. It would be a pain in the ass for accountability. It comes down to until recently there hasnt been a real need, or seen as needing one.

It has always been that way, and probably will never change.

Fear of mutiny.

Fear of mutiny? Thats crap, it hasn't always been that way. I spent four years on Ft. Hood and although the military weapons were locked in the arms rooms, many units had weapons and marched, drilled and carried them all over the base. The only regulation that was strictly enforced was that you could not transport a mil weapon in your POV. Any mil vehicle was ok. There was nothing preventing anyone from getting ammunition or magazines either, mags were everywhere and ammo could be bought in any gun shop or department store.

As for private weapons, They too could be brought on base. They have their own rod and gun club.......I bought a .45 there. If you lived in the barracks, you could store your gun in the arms room and take it out with notification of the battery CO or staff duty officer.

Ft. Hood also had a hell of alot of MPs around when I was there. You couldn't drive two blocks without seeing one passing in one direction or another. Two of my roomates were MPs there.

The fools running this government and the military bases need to wake from their panzie assed, politically correct coma and realize that if they setup the kill zones for people.....people are going to get killed. Schools, colleges and now our own military bases...what utter fools. The strategic planners of the world must be busting a gut laughing at the U.S. facilitating its own suicide.

As for mutiny......thats a laugh. There isn't anyone on those bases that doesn't want to be there.........they ALL voluteered remember? The draft stopped back in 1973. Some may not like it there, but mutiny is not even on the radar. They could walk away or claim mental problems and they'd be gone.

Somehow, I hold the Army responsible for leaving everyone on post as vulnerable as lambs to slaughter with their no weapons policy.

This is what troubles me and perhaps not being an insider, I don't understand why more are not armed on a military base. The only thing I can relate it to is visiting my brother in the years following 9/11 when he was assigned to The Pentagon. Everyone - officers-to-enlisted were wearing their BDU's. He's Air Force, so I sued to poke fun at he and his colleagues because the AF had not upgraded their BDU's yet. Everyone was bustling around D.C. looking like soldiers, but not equipped like soldiers. I asked John why everyone was wearing fatigues and not their for formal uniforms to work. He told me it was procedure following 9/11. The thing that troubled me is that although everyone looked battle-ready, not a single person was carrying a sidearm - or any arm. The security seemed lax and service members relaxed - in this most vulnerable atmosphere. A terrorist could have walked into his office building, (separate from the Pentagon in downtown), taken out the unarmed private security and gone wholesale in the building....MP's/DC PD would have been powerless to stop it - and this was just one building in a sprawling downtown military presence. I felt anything but secure the week I was there....

The only thing that bothers me about this shooter being alive, is that he will of course get the death penalty, but will be put to sleep like a sick dog. I wish the military would readopt the firing squad or hanging. He deserves the drama and tension with a proper execution - the pain of death - even if only momentary, rather than the sweet release of narcotics...I pray someone gets to him and tortures his ass before he goes straight to hell....

He'll be handled with kid gloves......you can bet your ass on that.

It is a sad sad world when stuff like this happens.. Unfortunatrly it is not the forst time an officer has done, or tried to do something like this..

My predictions of what we will hear..

1) He will be painted as the victim of harrassment, due to being Muslim.

2) He will claim PTSD by proxy because of all the soldiers he treated returning from war.

3) He was a good American, that just snapped.

4) The media will keep covering this to take attention away from the health care bill being voted on under the cover of media darkness(Saturday)

5) This whole thing could have been avoided if the American people were more tolerant of other races and religions.

6) You will rarely hear the word terrorist or Muslim regarding this POS.

This whole things sickens me..We can't do what needs to be done do to political correctness.

Really, when was the last time a Muslim officer of the US Army opened fire on a bunch of unarmed troops on a military base in the US ?

Bingo!

It appears the warning signs were there but the Military is now more Politically correct than a disciplined force run by politics not sound planning to win a battle they are trained for. The two do not mix and the proof is are military personnel kill by wacko's in their ranks.

Lack of decisive action to protect rather than react fail those killed!!

President Bush's Administration did one thing right after 9/11. They changed to a Proactive policy. That is the ONLY way to protect America and it's citizens.

We are talking about carrying personally-owned weapons on base.

Where's the logistical problem with that?

You cant carry personally owned firearms while on duty or in an official capacity. Only government owned ones. So the guys at the SRC or on base during duty hours unless having the day off would still be unable to carry POWs.

1: Good. Maybe that will finally draw to light how effing stupid the whole "he was just expressing his feelings" bunny-hugging can't-we-all-just-get-along and have a beer at the whitehouse and talk it over PC BS. I *DARE* them to play that card.. Please.. let them do it!

2: Very possible... not an excuse, but I can see that being done.

3: I doubt that card will get played, as he seems to have a track record of building up hostility.

4: *BINGO*. "Never let a good crisis go to waste..."

5: I do think we will see that one, hence me hoping they try option #1 so maybe folks will realize it is not an excuse for killing innocent folks.

6: Yea, I promise you we will hear "religion of peace" more than than him being a radical Islamic nutcase.
