I was just writing a sarcastic reply to a question about the 1911 on another forum, and it got me thinking - next year marks 100 years of the 1911 design. I think we should all celebrate by buying (or building) a 1911 in 2011. Given how long that can take (I want it finished in 2011), I'm going to start planning now...

If I was going to design a gun to celebrate 100 years of 1911 it would probably come out looking a little like this:

STI 2011. If only I had unlimited funds. *drool* Oops, excuse me, gotta clean my keyboard.

ETA: Back. I have been wanting to build a 1911. Group buy?

Now here is the question. Would you make it a great competition gun with all the goodies? Or more a commemorative gun with nickel plating, custom engraving, gold inlay, special grips, etc?

Please excuse my inclination to post gun porn. You said 2011 1911 and this came right to mind. Beautiful? Yes. Operationally perfect? Maybe. Affordable? Probably not.

Well, I think your OP alluded to a collectible item. I think this would be a great platform to design such a pistol based on an STI platform, however I somehow doubt that an order for 20+ of these would take quite some time, and they are prohibitively EXPENSIVE for many, before any custom work.

I bet remsport could come up with something.

I totally agree the 100 year anniversary of the 1911 design is significant. And I want one. So yeah. [popcorn]

I hate that gawdy "commemorative" crap. I'd go with something classic, refined, but sans the "goodies." Hand fitted, nice blue finish, dark wooden grips, etc.

I've been wanting to get a pair build for my father and me. Maybe this is the chance to start that project.

Actually, I think that the Model 1911 was developed a few years earlier (1909?). 1911 was when it was adoped by the US Army as it's official sidearm.

I'm not sure Colt will do a 100 year anniversary. They did a 70 year commemorative called the "American Combat Companion 1911 - 1981" (which I have, No. 103 of 150). It was done because they knew the 1911 was being dropped for the Beretta, so it was to signify 70 years at the side of American servicemen. It was distributed only to the military (for distinguished service I believe): 150 for enlisted and 25 in gold inlay for officers. If they did a 100 year model I would definitely look at it, but I think the 70 years in the military was the important milestone to them.

2011 Anniversary Edition

Personally I love the traditional look of the original issue pieces. I would love to see one with a simple (1911-2011) inscription of some sort on military style script. Maybe parkerized. Any modern touches made understated like Trij combat night sights, no mag well, no ports, no nickle, (maybe a stainless version if those are really wanted) and simple mag base pads, a traditional hammer and trigger. All of these old school parts could be made to performance specs if desired for function but the old look is way too cool to move far from. Plus, the big one, is to price it so us schmucks w/o a ton of dough can afford to buy one. Maybe 1500.00 - 1900.00 [rofl]Nice case, two mags.

I'd go with SVI over STI for that kind of gun.
I'll have a few at the USPSA table if anyone wants to check one out.

Especially as they ARE Mass-compliant, a status STI has yet to achieve.
Yup. SVI hired an attorney who is not exactly well known for treading lightly to represent the firm; paid a lab to drop a bunch of guns on to concrete; and spent an amount they will never recover with sales to MA - and they knew it was an economically losing proposition going in but just wanted to do us folks behind enemy lines a favor.

ps: The gun in my avatar (at the time of this posting) is an SVI 40.

I'm settle for finding a Colt Combat Commander in good condition.

Personally I don't care much for commemorative editions, I prefer my handguns as shooters.
That dosen't mean it can't be dressed up a little. Deep blued finsh with stainless accents & nice grips will do just fine. I'd be in for the shoot too. [smile]

How about a 1911 only shoot to celebrate?

Bring and shoot as many 1911's as you can. Then one HUGE photo of all the guns present.

genius idea. that would be awesome!

and carl, i totally agree with your idea for a reproduction of the original, maybe throw a ltiny bit of commemorative engraving on there. i'd get one!

I saw a great one at the Standish Gun Show over a week ago. I was broke. He offered to let me make a deposit, but I passed. Called him on Tuesday to find it had been sold THAT DAY! Oh well it was not meant to be.

We at Remsport would love to work with you on this 2011 project.
The story with the STI 2011 is this is the model number for their guns built on the plastic composite double stack frame and is named so because the patent for that frame is up for renewal in 2011., We could put together a special slide, frame and barrel, not the STI one but the Remsport products. So get together and put some ideas together. Contact us at Remsport we would like to be the ones to do this for you.
We at Remsport were also thinking about putting together a Scott Brown commemorative AR15 and donate it to GOAL for them to raffle off. The idea is to have Dan Brown and the election date or Scott Brown 1 as the serial number.
I am sure we would need Dan Brown's approval to use his name as the serial number though. Does anyone have a contact or a relationship with Scott Brown's office to possible get this approval?
Thanks
John
Let me know what you think.

Who is 'Dan Brown" and why would he be associated with this project? Inquiring minds want to know.

I take it this wouldn't be legal for MA purchase?
