Bullshit: Penn & Teller on Gun Control

Fantastic show! I forgot to mention that when I saw Penn & Teller in Vegas, they met everyone out in the lobby, chatted and took pictures. I personally thanked them for this particular episode, and Penn seem very pleased about that, telling me he's a big gun guy himself. Here are a couple pics btw:

BTW, Teller does speak! He's actually pretty damn funny, too. [smile]

Gee! Those two guys look like Rebo and Zootie!!

ETA: Great clip! Thanks for sharing!!! I'll send that one around at work on Monday!

I love this show too, this one did its job. These guys use humor to really make some great points. I think I will be forwarding this link to a lot of people, on all sides of this issue.

Two related statistics that I like use in debating gun control.

* Washington D.C. enacted a virtual ban on handguns in 1976. Between 1976 and 1991, Washington D.C.'s homicide rate rose 200%, while the U.S. rate rose 12%.

* Florida adopted a right-to-carry law in 1987. Between 1987 and 1996, these changes occurred:
___________________ Florida vs. United States
homicide rate ________ -36% vs. -0.4%
firearm homicide rate __ -37% vs. +15%
handgun homicide rate__ -41% vs. +24%
(some would say these are just coincidences)
(as quoted from http://www.justfacts.com/gun_control.htm)

I am always on the look out for good sources of clear statistics for numbers like these. They sure help confuse the gun control fanatics! Anyone have a clear and solid source of data, stats, etc. all in one place??? Please post the best ones.

BTW- I know that gun shop in Maryland, and was just there last month, for the first time. Now I will have to go back again and buy something (non-handgun of course) from him.

If you lived in vegas, would you ever come to Boston?

I've got that whole episode on my PC. Classic.

One of the other will either support or refute the statistics.

(Generally "support", but no one is infallible. ;-)

This link is contrary to what I've heard since the AWB in 1994. I thought they came to the conclusion that the AWB did nothing? This would show a trend if I was an antigunner.

A trend in total firearm deaths has nothing to do with the AWB. They only thing the AWB could possibly affected was deaths and injuries from so-called "assault weapons". The fact that deaths from handguns (the vast majority of all firearm deaths) declined couldn't be influenced in any way by the AWB. As the NAS review and the later GAO analysis both concluded, the ban had no discernable effect.

I'm resurrecting this old thread to ask if anyone downloaded this video? Google doesn't have it anymore, and I'd love to host it a bit on my website for some on-the-fencers to watch.

Ann, I remember seeing that episode. They are pretty funny, & seemed to smash a lot of the typical stereotypes.

I'm still waiting for that season to be released on DVD.

Off topic; I have seen Penn and Teller many times. They got me interested in James Randi. www.randi.org He's a debunker and I throw him $100 a year. I have always been against cheats and pseudoscience.

Anyways P&T is the only reason I subscribe to Showtime.

JonJ and Scrivener, neither link would connect me to anything.
Ya, it looks like Google may have pulled it. Maybe copyright problems? Ken was looking to maybe hosting it somewhere that he had space.
