I park in the Common garage.

Tonight when I went to my car there was a local TV crew there taping. As you can tell by my handle, I knew the only reason could be that something bad had happened. I asked them and sure enough, two women had been attacked in the last two weeks in the garage.

They asked me to do an interview, which I did.

I said that even if you put a security guard every ten feet there is basically no substitute for individual situational awareness...avoiding any kind of potential trouble.

I have my doubts if that will make air because I think what they wanted me to say was that there really SHOULD be a security guard every ten feet.

If I had my wits about me (usually an impossibility), I probably should have said that IF this stupid, moronic city and state would allow women to protect themselves, there wouldn't be any need for security guards (unarmed of course).

That's today's story and I'm sticking to it.

I ALWAYS carried when I was going in town, ESPECIALLY when using that garage. Between the unsupervised expanse, hiding places from all the parked cars and the isolated stairwells, it's a predator's paradise.

Ban Kitchen Knives!

From BPD News:

Within the past week, two women have been robbed and assaulted while walking in two different stairwells at the Boston Common Parking Garage. In both incidents, while waiting in the stairwell, the suspect grabbed the victims and pushed them against a wall. The suspect told the victim in the first incident that he is a junkie and needs money for a fix. The suspect appears to be getting more aggressive, utilizing a kitchen knife as a weapon in the latest incident.

Damn you, New Hampshire, and your lax kitchen knife laws!!!

POP QUIZ: What can our mayor, our legislature, and police commissioner do to best address this problem and prevent future attacks of this nature from occurring?

(A) Looking at "where" these crimes are taking place, the answer is clear. Ban parking garages!

(B) Looking at "who" the victims are - women out walking by themselves - we can pass legislation to make them less attractive targets by requiring women to have a male escort when leaving their homes or workplaces.

(C) Looking at "how" these crimes are being perpetrated, it's even more obvious what needs to be done. City and state officials must band together with their cohorts in the national media and launch a relentless PR campaign critical of the lax kitchen utensil laws in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

(D) Lastly, we can address the "why" behind these crimes and work to eliminate the demand that fuels them. All we have to do is create a taxpayer-funded cash distribution center for the local crackheads and meth fiends.

I call upon our leaders to act now, and implement any, or all, of these "common-sense" public safety initiatives -FOR THE CHILDREN!. If enacting one of these proposals could save JUST ONE LIFE, imagine what a Utopian paradise of peace and love we'd be living in if we could manage to get all four of these passed.

Can't ban cars, too big a revenue stream.

Just ask City Councilor Scappichio (sp?). He was the idiot last year who proposed a tax for drivers entering downtown Boston - to be enforced by taxpayer funded city employees monitoring a massive network of video cameras covering all access roads into town.

Drivers entering downtown Boston without having paid extra for the privilege would receive citations by mail.

I wish I was making this stuff up.

I really do.

I ALWAYS carry when going to Boston, regardless of where. :1

This isn't news: both the Common Underground and Government Center garages are well-known for attacks on patrons.

Since nowadays the additional cost isn't all that much, you are much better off at one of the "private" garages, such as 75 State Street or One International Place.

I don't know the pricing for 75 State, but IP is $30/day once you get over about 2 or 3 hours in there.
