Best State to move to....

TN,IA or MT.

Now I just need to find a woman that won't mind living in seclusion with me waiting for the end of the world while digging tunnels and setting landmines around the perimeter.[smile]

I thought i was alone in a search for a woman like that...

Virginia's a nice place. Low taxes, low crime(especially here), right to carry, unlicensed open carry, and no AWB or mag limits. We do get some pretty good cold spells in the winter, but it hardly ever snows. Summers are hot and humid.

One thing to maybe consider is that there will come a time when even the best state in terms of personal freedom will become oppressive as the socialists and other nutjobs continue to throw this nation off a cliff. So yes it would take longer for the really oppressive laws to reach you personally in a good state like NH or Montana or such but it will come nonetheless. I have no doubt about it, myself. I'm thinking that I would recommend option #1- especially if you do indeed have a close and loving family nearby. #2 won't leave you with much options and the advantages of #3 (less oppressive laws) will diminish as time goes by and you'll still be 3,000 miles away from family. My relatives live 12 hrs drive away, and in Montana (and in Hawaii) and it might not seem like so much but really it becomes an impossible distance once you are really in the situation. Especially when you remember how much of an insult to your dignity airline travel has become, and who has time to drive for days and days.

I live 3,000 miles away from my family with good reason.[grin]

I'd like NH except it is being overrun by ma**h***s who will soon, in all likelihood, destroy it.

Second might be MT but I don't know that my job skills (developing software) will do me a whole lot of good there. I also will not look forward to the extreme winter cold, but I can bear it if I can only figure out the employment issue.

I sense a distinct dislike for southerners.
I've spent a fair bit of time in the south, including a summer in Wise County, VA (adjacent to KY), a year in Augusta, GA, a year in Atlanta, GA, a year in Dallas, and a month in Houston. I still have friends in the Dallas and Atlanta areas from those gigs. There are nice folks all over. There are jerks all over.

I'm sure plenty of folks love those areas, but they're not for me.

Doesn't look like a promising job market for software folks: http://jobsearch.monster.com/Montana/Computers-Software/get-jobs-14.aspx That search turned up 10 jobs. Doing the same search in Boston on Monster.com gave more than 1100 jobs.

1. Mobile, AL
2. Lubbock, TX
3. Amarillo, TX
4. Gainesville, FL
5. Wichita Falls, TX

I have been to WV and like it there. But it was a bit cold. MSN said Morgantown WV is one of the most up and comming citys in the country. Western VA is nice.

NH will turn into Massachusetts North if, AND ONLY IF, this mentality is allowed to prevail and go unchecked.

NH: One person's voice can, and does, make a difference.

MA: One person's voice isn't so much as a fart in the wind.

Western VA is nice.

It is very pretty. Not much work, outside of the coal mines. Lots of poverty. The strip mines and tailings piles from deep mines have done some pretty bad environmental damage in some areas. Hot and humid in the summer. Inexpensive place to live.

Here is how I "found" New Hampshire:
Find your spot
.

That site overwhelmingly wants to send me to Washington State, which I had never considered, but will check out.

Panhandle Idaho and Western Montana are interesting to me as well.

My work can be done anywhere. OTOH, my KIDS will need a solid edjummication and a chance to work in something more fulfilling than mining coal or installing arm rests for whatever car mfg survives.

Wherever I depart Mass to go in a (hopefully) few years will have to have a future for them, not just my needs / wants. Otherwise, a mountaintop cabin in the wilds of Tennessee would do just fine.

The best careers for rural living are in healthcare and education. Even small towns have clinics/hospitals in the vicinity and rural school districts are always desperate for teachers. And remember that in a lot of these places the cost of living is so low that you can get by quite comfortably on a moderate income.

My girlfriend’s father lives in Manassas VA. She dragged me down there twice this year. Work seems steady, and good hospitals and universities are no to fare away. I believe the jobs are mostly government and service oriented. Cost of living is moderate, and the local environment is nice there are plenty of places to fish and hike (Manassas Battle fields). Dc is a short drive, if that is your thing, and VA gun laws a pretty good. Cracker-barrel restaurants are abundant. There are a lot of BIG deer there. Even there small deer are bigger then our big deer here in MA. And they have Wegmans grocery store. Wegmans is like a Quincy market type place.

I only drove threw Western part of VA. We took RT64 to 82 to 70 to 68 to get to Morgantown WV. I did notice the beautiful views. Ill be back in July so ill take a closer look. Poverty is rampant in a lot of those area. Drug and alcohol abuse are also rampant

The states also pay the teachers a higher income for relocating and working in those "conditions."

I was in Pound, VA, which is a world away from Manassas. Think Appalachia. The locals told me that the biggest drug dealer in the area was the Sheriff's son.

moving

I like it here in SC.there are down sides.tax on real estate low.tax on goods high.land cheap.culture sucks.no fid and only one permit concealed carry, and they mean concealed.I shoot on my own land.hunting deer is sept 1 tp jan 1 no game stations, unlimited bucks.I have over 29 deer on my land.homestead law is fantastic.65yrs,and $50,000 of assesed value.gun clubs are few and far between.but hunting clubs are everywere.the weather is hot and winters get cold but no snow.

My thoughts exactly. I lived in Maine in the early 70's.. no taxes to speak of, a conservative (read out of my face) govt... now look at it.. Highest taxes around (even higher than Mass), Northern Maine wants to form a new state as the wack jobs that moved in down south are killing personal freedom.

I think the wisest choice would be to figure out what you like for weather and outdoor activity.. Love the Opera.. NYC.. Love hunting, northern new england , ND, SD, MT and ID. TX... Love farming then all of the midwest is in.

Get to a place you love be cause of what is there then get involved.. make sure it does not get subverted by well intentioned Nazis, or better yet, reclaim the place...

If you want a good climate - nothing can beat California. No winters, no hot and humid summers. If you want to ski - go to the mountains and then return back for a spring. It is expensive, but the salaries are higher and state colleges are pretty cheap.
If you want something moderate - Washington or Oregon. 1 hour drive to snow cap mountains. No income taxes in Washington, no sales taxes in Oregon.

By the way, I never felt that Massachusetts taxes really hurt me. My friend living in NH pays property taxes that are equal to my property taxes, income taxes and sale taxes combined here in Mass. Ditto for Texas(around 8% sales taxes, if I'm not mistaken)

I'll take 8% sales tax over our state income tax + 5%+ sales tax here in MA any day of the week.

I couldn't be happier in Texas. I got the hell out of this communist hellhole as soon as I could. The next step is to become a legal resident of Texas. Dallas is an incredible city, and I've never met such welcoming and genuinely good people except for possibly Ohio.

Missouri the people were really friendly there.I just don't want the white stuff.[grin] So TX or NM it is for me.
MLBLO no way would I ever consider Cali. It is a beautiful state, but your gun laws are way worse than ours.[rolleyes] I lived there briefly many moons ago before it got this bad, the only good thing that could happen would be that nice huge earthquake to send that state of into the ocean.

I am thinking of a nice condo in Cambridge mass. Good schools , interesting people , mass transit , cute little places to eat , low crime rate , lots of young people. .... can be hard to park my Prious though , maybe I should get one of those SmartCars or a Segway.

... Sorry, not funny.

I'm thinking New Hampshire. And in all honesty , the biggest hesitation I have is the prejudice and dislike for Ma**h***s moving in and ruining their state. Which is too bad , because I think that feeling - which I see all over this site - is a childish reaction to the shame New Hampshire residents feel for their own Democrat party tendancies.

Every person I ever heard of - myself included hopefully someday - move to new Hampshire because they want to live in a Free State , conservatives and Libertarians.
I hope enough of us can move before the locals finish ruining their own state.

+1

Somewhere on this board I observed that NH is doing to itself now what Mass did to itself 30 years ago.

30 years from now NH may be about the same as Mass is today, but A) I'll be ready to pack it in shortly thereafter and B) Mass will be about the same as living in Castro's Cuba.

What NH needs (and mostly is getting) is new blood that embraces freedom and personal responsibilty.

Equal in dollar value, maybe, but polar opposites from one another as far as implementation and control are concerned.

I don't have to launch into my local vs. centralized taxation and spending rant again, do I?
