Best all-around AR cartridge to build my next rifle for

300blk is not a great ‘all around’ cartridge, but it does suppressed SBR very well, and cqb of course. Everyone should have atleast one 300 blk pistol/sbr. My buddy hunts with his, 10” barrel SBR, ~6” can puts it at 16” rifle size, and no need for ear pro. It may not make as much sense in mass where you’re never getting a suppressor, but it makes sense in America!

Yes the subsonic is expensive, but all ammo right now is expensive so that’s a moot point right now. The days of 300 blk subsonic mag dumps are gone, for now atleast....

As I settle in with my decision to go 6.5 Grendel, this was a good reference and helped support my decision.

Reading that article might have renewed my interest in .224 Valkyrie, might be suddenly seeing a "need" :).. but I am going to resist until my current Creedmoor project is finished off with the scope I want.

What do you need?

'Need' has nothing to do with it. Need creates opportunity for compromise.

But to make it the gun I want, I'll start with the barrel & bolt, then magazines, which are all caliber-specific items, and then everything else from the stripped lower on up.

Probably a Daniel Defense adjustable stock.
I've had good luck with Geissele and POF triggers, but may go Timney
I'll re-purpose a Nikon M-308 4-16 BDC800 scope.

Everything else is just parts.

I get by really well with a Magpull STR and MBT2S triggers.

Basically both just don't leave anything to be desired for me.

There was somethin floating around awhile ago about the Grendel and the bolt or bolt face splitting or coming apart in an a.r.
Never looked into it, never owned it.
May have something to do with heavier or longer bullets and pressure.
There is a member here, an for the life of me can't remember who it is, had mentioned seeing Grendel bolt lugs being sheared off at competitions I think.

I was asking because I was going to do another 6.5 Grendel build (I already have one).

I started acquiring parts years ago, but never got around to completing it.
I probably have a bunch of other parts laying around for it as well. Let me know if there's something you may want. I may have it.

Beyond that stock 308 and 223, Grendel is an easy answer. It's a great all-around cartridge and fits in ar-15 platform rather easily. Once you have Grendel, you can start futzing around with other cartridges. For me, the hierarchy of AR cartridges is 5.56,6.5 Grendel, 308, everything else....

Key thing being AR15 platform as the benefit and compromise. Creedmoor is a big contender if you don't quite need 30 caliber or are talking range outside of 500 yards. There is a slim area where Grendel actually kinda keeps up with 7.62/.308 (and a lot of area where it doesn't) but Grendel is inferior in all respects to Creedmoor excepting the weight of the platform that chambers it.

Creedmoor? Do you mean the 6.5 Creedmoor? If so, it doesn't fit the AR-15 Mag. 6.5CM is designed for 308 magazines, basically.

Yes, what I was saying is 6.5 Creedmoor ought to make your list up there (which included .308 which is an "AR10" caliber). It's well adopted, more so than say 6.5 Grendel, and accomplishes things none of those other 3 can. Only downside is you gotta put up with an extra lb or 2 of rifle to run it.

Basically with Grendel the most redeeming quality is it fits in an AR15.
