Belgian Air Force Needs A Few Replacement F-16's

Serious question, I understand the safety aspect of why they would dump unused bombs before making a carrier landing, but why blow off the ammo from the guns too ??? Is it to reduce landing weight ???

I was told that if a plane still carrying live ammo crashed on deck and a fire ensued that the unspent ammo could cook off possibly causing injury to those on the flight deck. Not sure about the weight thing. Each round weighs a little less than a pound but if you have 1000 rounds on board, that's a thousand pounds, more or less.

The weight on wheels doesn't always work. We had a similar incident in the 90s with A-10s in Tuscon. Sortie was over, pilot was gone, work was being done and BANG! Just one round, and it hit a berm. Luckily, no one and nothing was damaged - there's a significant difference between 20mm and 30mm rounds.
