so I finally got around to finishing my Romanian Guard AKM that I built a bit ago. I sanded down the nodak receiver till it was bare metal, inside and out- there's a blackened layer on the receivers from heat treat. Cleaned it out thoroughly and then hit it with cold bluing solution. I used Caswell's Cold Oxide solution which brought it to a pretty good hue that matched the black oxide on the romy g parts.
Then I hit the whole assembled rifle with a scotch bright pad and acted like I was just wiping it down. Let the outer surfaces of the parts catch the pad and I didn't "dig into" the rifle at any point. This simulated surface wear over time, IMO, and dang, it came out pretty darned good!
Pictures don't even do it justice.
