Well, in MA the punishment for not having a FID/LTC is 1 year in jail, correct? In NJ, its 10 years. So thats exactly one order of magnitude better.

But whatever makes you feel good--no use in comparing one communist sh1t hole to another just to make yourself feel superior.

I've been trying to find some details about the search of Aitken's car that lead to the weapons and ammunition. It looks like Brian MIGHT HAVE been able to avoid the whole situation had he refused the search of his vehicle. The police didn't have a probable cause and they sure as hell didn't have a warrant.

Don't talk to the police, keep your mouth shut, refuse to let the police in the car or house and lawyer up should be on the play card of every gun owner.

Physically speaking, you won't be able to "refuse" a search... you can say you don't consent, but that's about it. Of course, that all assumes there is someone or something (eg, an audio recording) to register that you did indeed not consent to search, otherwise a bad LEO can lie and just say that you consented.

In a place like NJ they'll probably just make you sit around in the cop car till they come back with a warrant, anyways... if the stop is halfway legit, or pretending to be that way. I would bet they get rubber stamped pretty often down in a place like that dump.
