I have a Bomar low mount adjustable rear sight on my Colt 1911 and want to put in a fiber optic front. Brownells offers four choices and the prices are similar. The firearm will be primarily used for IPSC and target, not a carry piece. Your opinions and experiences please, thank you in advance

F/O sights.

What sight cut is on your slide? The F/O sights have specific dovetails to fit a variety of cuts. EGW,Capian and Brazos offer large sized F/O elements. Dawson offers smaller. If the current front sight is staked in you can choose almost any one and have it cut in. Most smiths should have a variety in stock for you to look over. Greg

If the sight you have can be sighted in to your liking, get yourself a pair of calipers and learn to use them to get something the same height.
Take care and shoot straight

How wide is the notch in your rear sight?

For my eyes, I like a .125 wide front sight with a 0.60 fiber, matched to a Bo-Mar style rear sight with a 0.140 notch.

There is a trade off in accuracy, to sight picture acquisition speed, based on the size of the rear notch relative to front sight width. The more light passing through the rear sight notch (on each side of the front sight) the faster you can acquire a good sight picture. Less light passing through the rear sight notch slows sight picture time, but allows for a more precise alignment of the two sights.

Your choice of front sight width could be determined on how well you can see it. [grin]

Respectfully,

Thank you for your advice, the firearm is a late 1980's series 80 Colt 1911. I will measure the front sight and look at it more closely.
