This little gem has me all worked up

I have to ask- would the people who are against recruiters calling their homes prefer that we just reinstate the draft?!

Actually, they would prefer the draft, since they'll just dodge it like they did in the 60's and early 70's.

Obviously, since by doing so they'd once more be in a position to argue that all the wealthy, more educated whites "somehow managed to avoid the draft, so that the poor, less educated and minorities were overrepresented in the military. I really think that one of the best thing about the Corps when I was in was the fact that, unlike all the other branches, we still had enough volunteers that we didn't need draftees. Nobody sat around bitching about being forced to go, or whining that it "wasn't fair".

That's a good point Ken. Granted I never got sent to fight, everybody that I trained with was there because they wanted to be. It makes a big difference in unit cohesion.

Having served with Draftees and spent time in the "Modern Volunteer Army", I think I can say that both had their good points. A lot of the draftees were really good troops, some were bad. But, during the time I spent later, in the "MVA", we didn't waste time with scumbags. We had them gone in a few days, right out the door.

Over time, though, it's come to bite them in the backside, at least in the Reseve Components. We've had some Guardsmen come down on deployment orders, and get a sudden case of "Yellow Fever". They're gone, good riddance.

I still believe in a volunteer military, though.

For my yard that wouldn't be too hard. I'm trying to talk Glenn into letting me have a tank for a lawn ornament,so I can make the neighbors real uneasy. So far I can't talk him into it. :)

Get a C&R and you can buy one!! C'mon Glenn....let her have a tank.
:D

Whenever I thought about the guys in tanks, the image of of cooking spam in a can comes to mind. I'll cop a lift on top, but that's as far as I'll go. Now a nice big gun on the front lawn is a whole different thing. You might be able to get a nice deal on an old M-40A1 106mm Recoilless Rifle since that the morons ^h^h^h^h^h^h^h geniuses in charge decided to dump most of them. IIRC, the whole shebang weights in around 460 pounds, so it should be easy to move around in response to whichever neighbors are causing the biggest stink at the moment. [evil]

My "other" set of "wheels" (occasionally, of course), 56 tons of FUN:

Tony, I FAR prefer the M88A1 over the M1 in the field. The M1 may outrun me, but it sure is fun watching them get out of my way on the tank trails. Of course, I rarely drive. The Guard issued me a "tool" for that job. A private or Specialist (possibly an E-5, or certain E-5). Like maybe the now SGT E-5 that gave me a tree for Father's Day a few years ago when he was an SPC. He was driving an M109A5 (like the one hanging) out to one of the Firing Batteries to switch it over (it was a "float" gun) and he clipped a tree (and I was the Track Commander). Amazing things your son will do to get your attention.

I can't remember the last time I've ever seen so much wrong information in a news article. But hey it's CNN what else should I expect.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/06/17/military.in.schools.ap/index.html
I saw a news report on TV and they were interviewing some kids at an inner city HS. One kid actually said "i don't tink dey (recruiters) should be here. Dey don't tells us da whole story. It can be dangerous, yous can be killed and dey don't tell us dat."
Just what the F*&$ are they teaching kids about US history? Whatever happened about learning about the Revolutioary, Civil, WWI and WWII wars? Or war in general? They have no idea what the military is.
Damn, when I was in middle school (late 60's early 70's) it was a given that we were gonna go to Viet Nam. Then in HS we had recruiters in the school for huge assemblies. No one ever bitched.
