Sembach Air Base anyone?

A few pics showing how parts of the former U.S. Air Base look like today.

Abandoned shelter

One of the former A-10 shelters has been converted to an indoor range some
years ago and is host to the BDMP's (Federation of Military and Police Shooters)
shotgun nationals every year.

During the conversions a ceiling was inserted, allowing to split the shelter into
two floors. Now there are two 50m ranges located in the first and two 25m
ranges in the 2nd floor.

Me thinks, that the tree huggers don't like this kind of conversion of formerly
military installations, but I really DGAF about their hurt feelings.

Our site in Berlin that we worked at,(T-Berg) is in ruins and been vandalized, and the Kasern where our Barracks, where is no longer there. Same with where the duty train was. All demolished and gone. Some of McNair is still there and only because it has a museum there. How times have changed. When I was stationed in Berlin I never thought the wall would come down. Now to get back and see Berlin unified.

USN. '92-'96
Naval "Nuke-yoo-lar" Power School in Orlando and Idaho. (yeah, didn't finish. Attrition got the better of me)
USS Kalamazoo, AOR-6
Portable gas station for whoever needed us, up and down the Atlantic coast from Iceland to the Bahamas if we didn't have a group to follow or a long-term mission.
Gitmo, early months of '94
USS George Washington Battle Group, Med Cruise in '94. 50th anniversary, June 6th, D-Day...off the coast of Brest, France.
South America 3-month tour in summer of '95.
First two years on her, we spent 20 months at sea.
Longest time at-sea: 47 days. We had just finished an operation in the Gulf, headed back to the Med thru the Suez. Saddam decided to play some tricks, and one day from reaching our port, we turned around, followed GW back thru the Ditch, and played in the Gulf for another month before finally heading back to our fuel depot in the Med. As a tanker, K-Zoo was riding a wee bit high after that fiasco. IIRC, the screws were splashing above the waterline, we were that empty.

USN - 1982 to 1992 - Avionics Technician Second Class (Aviation Warfare Specialist)
USS Nimitz - AIMD VAST - Up and down the coast of Lebanon for 90 straight days (CO of boat gypped us out of our beer because we were hitting Naples in a couple of days)
VS-31 Topcats- Attached to the USS Eisenhower - Did 3 cruises to Med, Red Sea and Persian Gulf (Desert Shield and Desert Storm). Lots of workup cruises to the Caribbean!!!![smile]
Avionics Instructor - VS-27 Seawolves - Cecil Field, FL. Lots of golf during this stint (almost felt guilty getting paid).
All in all, an excellent adventure.

Just got finished 4 years and 4 months of active duty as an 89E/91A. Had my fun in Afghanistan from March 2010 to March 2011 and I'm currently living the dream in the Guard here in Mass.

Drallanmartel did you know a Bobby Anderson when you were in Sinop? He came from there to Field Station Berlin where Hubby and I were stationed.

As of 3 weeks from now, I'll be RichM, USAR(R) with 27 years of Army Reserve service, including one mobilization. I got the call last night, and a copy of my retirement order today.

Time to hang up the uniform and let the boots rot in the basement!
