Sounds like some ATF cretin said that and nobody said. “Why would we do that when it’s not required under state or federal law?”
The ATF most definitely makes shit up to those who don't know the law. Those in charge of retail for large chains assume the ATF wouldn't lie to them so they do what the ATF told them.

Mike, Some folks are so stupid that they believe whatever some government moron tells them. Remember this store is the one that Allowed two Vermont Troopers with a "Vermont" issued warrant for purchasing records of someone who bought magazines. Those troopers and that warrant had NO authority in the State of New Hampshire. The store manger rolled over
Well they were cops so they must be the good guys right? [rofl]

Derek, What they pulled pissed me off. There is no excuse for not following the rules. Of course, If you play by the rules and tell the truth you are not "A Team Player".

One possible explanation is that the store manager was a Vermont resident and the troopers had done their homework and knew they could remind him/her of that fact - "See what happens when you cross the river after work today" - in order to get compliance with their illegal request.

I just sent Mr. Sprague an email directing him to this thread.
pointless, as he already stated outloud of what happens to those who do not obey lawless demands of those new age gestapos:
'difficult for any business attempting to operate in such a highly regulated environment, particularly in the age of “Zero Tolerance” inspections'

not if that would not be their choice of to comply with unlawful edicts or not to - but - it is what it is, at this point, for most stores. same topic as processing xfers on lowers, etc - most simply are afraid enough to stay away from the chance of possible retaliation.
