Is there a way to remove dings/gouges etc from wood ?

An old friend told me something about using an iron to pull the wood up when he used to fix Garand stocks .

Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this or a more concise instructions on the heat method above ?

The dings are very small, really only noticeable by me.

your friend is right.you steam up the dents with a hot iron and a damp cloth.the moisture raises the wood to make it level. or you just sand them out and touch it up.

So I just get a damp cloth and hold the iron over it ?

Sanding doesn't seem to be working, they are probably a little too deep.

I'm using Tung oil and I want to try and stay away from any wood stain.

yes, a hot iron.the steam will raise the wood grain to make it level.you can even squeeze the rag let it drip water on the dent cover and apply heat. i do it all the time at work,i refinish furniture.
