Like the title says. I'm looking into get a new rifle...thinking of an AR in .308. I have a dpms ar-15 and i love it but i don't know too much about the newer gas piston stuff, or the .308 rifles. Does anyone have or recommend a good .308 in the AR platform? of course i'm looking for best bang for the buck. I'd like something that is accurate at a good yardage out but i'm looking for more of an m4 type then an m16. any help would be appreciated.

I think the vast majority of the designs are direct-impingement, and I personally think that the gas piston systems are a waste of money unless you're 1) buying an LMT and 2) taking it to Afghanistan.

to tell you the truth i'm not sure how much more the gas systems are. The only reason why i figured gas was this will be the "sniper" rifle out of what i have and i was told gas pistons are better for suppressors (for what reason i'm not sure but that's what i was told). When i do eventually move out of the state i would like the option. I'd like to spend as close to $1000 as possible, so if all the gas systems are near the price of that lewis machine that'll be a no go. More important then that to me honestly is recoil. I may just build one depending on opinions.

Adams Arms has a piston conversion in the works, but as of last week it is still being designed and does not have a release date. These guys (http://blackriflearms.com/) have one in the works, but I would be leery about buying such a product that has just been released, especially when the company is new and does not have a long track record as Adams has.

As far as staying around $1000, that won't even buy you a dirty look in the gas piston AR .308 world. LWRC and POF are the main players here, and both are over $2,500.. IF you can get your mits on one. I can say the POF is fairly light (under 10lbs) and DAMN accurate (almost as accurate as a bolt gun), but there are lots of QA issues with them. Once you get one that runs well it will run like a champ, be VERY accurate, and chimp simple to clean. However, if you get a new one be ready to send it back to POF at least once. They are supposed to be very can-friendly... the gas system even has a setting for suppressed.

OBR or bust.

I really like find out how to get/build an AR 10 under $1000. DPMS LR 308 probably the cheapest but still over $1k to start.

The cheapest piston 308 under $1k will be a converted Saiga 308. Not AR, but an AK.

well i definitly want an AR platform...i currently own a dpms .223/5.56 and love it; also have a wasr-10 and saiga 12, and while they're great up close and fairly accurate guns, there's nothing like the precision of an AR in my mind especially for something i intend on using for long distance. I believe the .308 dpms gas guns are around $1300...anyone have any experience with those? I'd love to spend $2500 but that's not in the budget right now. Anyone who has built .308 ar platform guns DI or Gas, mind posting pics/ what you used and advice?

The DPMS LR-308 is as good as any, and better than most other large-frame AR's. I don't know much about their carbine-length guns, but the 24" barrel model was extremely accurate. Have you ever shot, or been next to somebody shooting a short-barrel .308? It's loud to the extreme.

Accurate, Piston, Cheap - pick 2.

I got an LMT MWS 308 a few months ago from FS. It's not light, but it's exceptionally accurate, nicely balanced and easy to handle, and built like a tank. I'm trying to get a combination of time and adverse weather to get a better feel for how finicky it is, but so far, it's done everything that I've asked of it. Should I escape to the land of the free, it suppresses pretty well too...

No i have not. I'm thinking i'll go 18 inch barrel though. 16 is probably too short but i'm not sure i want a very long rifle with a 20+.

i've been trying to research people who have built their own on a few other AR dedicated websites. They have a few where they got their rifles to weigh around 8lbs which would be awesome but i've still yet to do a tally on how much that would cost so who knows if it's practical. Can anyone lead me to a thread on here that someone has posted up their ar in .308 build?

I can say from experience to stay away from the G3 magazine based 308 ARs.

I've since built a 308 AR on a DPMS pattern and it works much better. I think I still much prefer my SOCOM 16 though.

There are couple GB on AR10 lower (CMMG and Fidelis) and many members build AR-10 from the Group-buy. You won't be able to see the thread unless you signed up as a paid member here. As usual, I encouraged all member to go Green (Paid member) and support this awesome forum. You'll find all the info you needed for your quest.

You got that rifle for a great deal. Can't find any deal for Saiga 308 now. It will runs me more than 5 bills to get one. With simple conversion kit, probably under 7 bills.

nice saiga build. how's the accuracy?

It's an AK, I can hit an 8" paper plate at 50 yards with it, I have yet to try and shoot it any further. It was a fun and fairly inexpensive rifle project, but a cheap rifle that is expensive to feed is a rifle that doesn't get shot very much.

My advice, get a LR308 and never look back. I liked the first one I built so much I built a 2nd one (now up for sale in classifieds because I always just shoot my first one). Unfortunately your $1000 budget is more suited to the ar15 rather than a fully set up AR10 class rifle where most components are bigger and more expensive.

I've been looking at the LR308 and only thing that's holding me back is the barrel length. I'm not sure if i want an 18 inch or if i want something as long as a 24 to be honest. When you say you built it did you buy various dpms parts and do it all yourself or did you buy a LR 308 and add stuff later? i know...that's another reason why i like the LR308 because it's only 1200-1300, on their website anyway

I have a LR308 lower that is sitting in my safe waiting for me to finish an upper. I am leaning towards a Rainier Arms 16" barrel. I was thinking about an 18", but I am not sold on the extra 2 inches making that much of a difference.

I went downstairs and measured my .223 dpms AR-15 and it came out at 35inches long( stock was de-pinned and re-pinned in a mid way position). The LR308 says it is 37.5 with the 18 inch barrel and 43.5 with the 24. If i could keep it close to what my .223 model is length i'd be pretty happy. I'm not sure the 2 inches would make all that much a difference either. I'd like to see grouping comparisons on 16 vs 18 vs 20-24 inch barrels at a good distance. What would be the benefit of a rainier barrel vs. a stock dpms barrel?

I am piecing the rifle together as I get the money, and Rainier's barrels get decent reviews. I am pretty sure you wouldn't see any difference in accuracy with the difference in length, just a difference in velocity. I picked 16" because I don't want an other boat anchor. I made the mistake of going full retard with an M14 and it is to heavy to do anything with.

I did a little of both with my two LR308s. The 1200-1300 LR-308 is the base model with the basic stock, their cheaper upper receiver, their cheapest handguard, no compensator, etc. Nothing wrong with that but as soon as you want to upgrade it adds to the cost. The complete upper for one of my LR308s cost me about 1500 in components not including optics. I would go with a 16 to 18 inch barrel. Unless you will be shooting at 800 yd range you will never notice a difference with a 24 inch barrel.

I just went on the DPMS website and "built" an LR-308B with the 18 inch barrel. with all this stuff below it ended up around $1600. Anyone suggest not doing any of those upgrades and getting something aftermarket instead?
