New CMC guidance makes it official:

"A Marine is a Marine. I set that policy two weeks ago - there's no such thing as a former Marine. You're a Marine, just in a different uniform and you're in a different phase of your life. But you'll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. There's no such thing as a former Marine."

The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James F. Amos

The Rangers do it differently and there will never be a Press Release.

Once you pass the last patrol you get the "RLTW" talk from the Sergeant Major.

And he ends it by saying "Once a Ranger, always a Ranger. But if you ever get fat, I hope you f#ckin die." The implication is that others should be able to tell, without being told. More like the German General Staff motto "Be more than you appear to be."
