Got the following canned response from Sam Cohen- director of PGNH to my posting on their web site-
my read politics is complicated- we need democrats on our team and he's done good things so we are discussing him
and of course a membership pitch and a dig at other gun rights groups- typical for the groups up here.
------------------------------------------------------
As you might expect, Rep. Dan Eaton's status is a subject of much
discussion. Like the NRA, PGNH is a non-partisan organization -- Democrat
state rep Joel Winters is also on our Council of Advisors, and a very senior
Democrat state rep, Jay Phinizy, was one of our first Advisors, until he had
to resign when he took a federal government job (and he's definitely
pro-gun). Dan Eaton is in the Democrat party leadership -- and therefore
has no choice in some of his votes in the House -- but he does provide
pro-gun input to that party. A couple of years ago, at our suggestion, he
introduced a bill to repeal RSA 159:8 (which says that a dealer needs a city
or town permit to "to sell at retail pistols and revolvers"). He's also
co-sponsored several pro-gun-rights bills in this and previous legislative
sessions.
But in any case, don't worry: he's not on the Board of Directors of PGNH,
but rather on our Council of Advisors -- and as such he doesn't have a vote
on PGNH matters (and certainly not on policy). Eaton's presence validates
our status as a non-partisan organization while giving us a voice (no matter
how small) and a channel of communication in the state Democrat party. Think
of it like the U.S. having an ambassador to Russia.
Politics can be complicated, and things aren't always as straightforward as
they seem. For example, it's simple to say that every pro-gun/pro-rights
position must be fought for no matter what, but just a few years ago we had
to work hard to salvage our knife rights bill after another NH gun-rights
group, insisting on "no compromise," lobbied to kill it because it didn't
include brass knuckles -- something that we knew wouldn't fly in the
legislature. (We succeeded, and the bill became law, making New Hampshire
the freeest knife-rights state in the country.)
Thank you for your message, but I notice that you're not a member of Pro-Gun
New Hampshire (PGNH). PGNH is the largest and most respected Second
Amendment organization in the state; we hope that every Second Amendment
supporter in New Hampshire will add their voice to our community. It
doesn't matter if you're already a member of another gun-rights group; just
like some people read several news magazines, some people get their New
Hampshire gun-rights information from several sources -- it's not like
having to choose between political parties.
LIFE membership is only twenty dollars, with no dues after that one-time
sign-up fee. Per our bylaws, we keep membership information absolutely
private, and we don't bombard you with emails. We also have frequent and
generous gun raffles (usually at least two at a time) for members only.
Please go to our website,
Pro-Gun New Hampshire, and click on the left-most item on
the menu bar that runs across the top of the page, "About PGNH and
Membership."
