Richmond lawmakers have callously rejected a gun control proposal sought as a memorial to the 32 students slain in the Virginia Tech massacre. Once more, state senators proved more beholden to the gun lobby’s propaganda and campaign money than to public safety.

The measure, sought by Gov. Tim Kaine after the 2007 campus spree, would have reined in the unfettered sales of lethal weaponry — from backwoods to battlefield guns — at weekend “sportsmen’s shows.”

With no background checks required on customers, the dealers present convicted felons and sociopaths an enormous loophole for mayhem. A federal study traced half of the crime guns in Washington, D.C., to Virginia. They move along the “Iron Pipeline” of weaponry infecting states along Interstate 95.

Governor Kaine resolved to impose background checks after the public agony of Virginia Tech laid bare the state’s porous gun laws. In the post-mortem, officials theorized that the suicidal shooter, suffering mental illness, could have been turned away from a licensed gun dealer. But Mr. Kaine properly reasoned that the shooter could turn to the unlicensed dealers to buy unlimited assault weapons and ammunition for his campus atrocity.

The Senate’s retreat from gun controls was compounded by its repeal of another worthy Kaine priority — a ban on people swaggering into bars with concealed weapons and make-my-day fantasies. Bereft of courage as public servants, the Richmond senators made clear their crocodile tears about “closure,” shed in the immediate horror of students gunned down. They also made clear the need for a federal law to bypass cowardly statehouses and to close gun-show loopholes.

Well, what did you expect from the NY Slime Editorial Board? [sad2]

Just one lie or distortion after another. Of course they will be lapped up by the ignorant and used by the politically motivated. I think it might be time to put "reasonable restrictions" on the First Amendment.

How about a 200$ tax on every news paper you publish. Or perhaps if you have any column that is under 200 words?

Wah, Wah, Wha!

Couple that with the liberal a**h*** GM on Channel 5 that keeps talking about the Casino bill and what should happen with no mention the existing Lottery Rip off here in MA.

I've spoken to several LEO's that were at the Vtech shooting and every one of them said they wished someone inside had a gun to defend themselves. There may have only been one or two deaths and the shooter. It's a tragedy that should have prompted the elimination of "Gun Free Zones". When will we learn? What a waste.

More crap. Love how they use the opportunity to take a shot at guns shows. This kid bought the guns at a brick and morter store in Salem VA (it has since gone out of business) AND passed a Federal background check. NONE of the guns used in the killings would have been effected by this bill that just got voted down.

Memorial my a$$. This was an attempt by the anti's to cash in on the tragedy and push their agenda. They lost, hence the weeping in the Times.

Finally, it's the NEW YORK Times, not the Richmond. Why are they even editorializing on something that happened in another state?

What a load of old baloney. Why didn't they focus on the fact that none of the students or faculty were allowed concealed carry firearms, which could have ended the rampage very quickly. Instead, we continue to allow the notion of "Gun Free Zones" which to the genuine sociopaths reads "Target rich environment" with defenseless sheeple to mow down with no fear of facing an armed resistance.

Samuel Adams

You had me nodding, reading your post, but had my clicking my mouse to give rep when I got to your sig line. Awesome quote. First time I've read it. +1

if the gov't even tries to bail out a sh*t liberal news rag, then the public should be outraged.

But they won't be. Just as they are cowed into thinking we "need" to bail out the banks, the car manufacturers, ACORN, and every other poorly run enterprise in the country.

The inclusion of ACORN on that list was the cherry on that Sundae - a democrat voter registration group gets government money. Talk about diverting federal funds to benefit one party. It was the most brazen bit of pork on a brazenly porked out program - and the public swallowed it without a wimper.

Oh the piggies are at the trough.

We need to become not just patriots, but farmers. These pigs are getting to fat and its market time! :)

F'ing propaganda.

The New York Times is just one more part of a rather large socialist obamanation.

That needed a quotation box, if not a blood pressure warning.

So the kid bought the guns at a Roanoke VA gun shop, passed the NCIS and somehow gun shows are the issue?

Maybe someone more up on the facts can enlighten me. Was the kid ever involuntarily committed? I'm not sure if that's reported to the NCIC or not. I heard he spent some time in a hospital, but if it was a voluntary, that doesn't strip you of firearms rights.
