I bought a brand-new Smith and Wesson M&P 45! [party] Hope to try it tomorrow. Any suggestions or advises about the first time use, beside careful reading of the instructions?

Good luck with it. It's a great gun.

Only downside I have found (and reported to S&W) is that the 1st inch of the slide (and front sight) get covered in gray crud at ~50 rds. Front sight (especially if night sights, as they are inset) becomes gray and obliterated. Wiping a thumb across the sight doesn't work on the night sights, don't know if it will work on standard white dot or not.

After ~750 rds, the stock trigger comes down to ~6.9# in my experience.

Clean the bore and check the lube before shooting.

Then knock yourself out!

Good point!

The one I looked at just out of the box was bone-dry (with residue from factory test firing in bore). It needed cleaning and lube before being fired for the first time.

Its a little tricky taking the slide off.You have to use a pencil and push down on a little wire through the chamber.Have someone show you the first time.

Not tricky at all, especially as the tool to do so is PART of the pistol. Specifically, it is the rod which holds the interchangeable backstrap on.

As for jacketed ammo, it is my belief that jacketed ammo burnishes the bore; soft lead tends to build up in the imperfections.

Ask me how I know........... [rolleyes]

Why is that?
Lacketed ammo isn't allowed at my gun club range. If this is really important I'll have to find another place to fire it.

Come to Wrentham. We have an outdoor range, so there are no lead/jacketed issues.

Ah, Scriv are you forgetting MGLs on the exemption to bringing handguns to MA?? [rofl]

I'll offer the same to Yelena if she has a MA NR LTC and wants to shoot at Mansfield F&G as my guest.

Only reason I didn't offer earlier is that I don't think she has a MA NR LTC and as a RI resident I didn't want to put her in a position of violating MGLs.

She can shoot as a guest and Wrentham is just over the border. And if she comes to one of our CF pistol shoots, she is attending a match.

She can't bring a handgun into MA "just to shoot", only to a match . . . unless she possesses a MA NR LTC. Certainly you know this.

You could meet her at the border and escort her gun/ammo into MA for her if you want to be a nice guy. That's perfectly legal.

As Wrentham is a private club, she would necessarily have to coordinate with me to gain access to the range, eliminating the transportation problem.

Surely you knew this.........

Scriv, that is truly a generous offer. I hope she takes you up on it.

ETA: As you point out to all of us, you were less than obvious on your offer of an "escort service" to/from CheckPoint Charlie border crossing.

Embarassed...

Well, thanks everyone for encouragement, but I did not try it today, for a pretty foolish reason [sad] I field-stripped the gun, lubricated it and then assembled it back, and just was not absolutely positive if I did everything correctly. I know it sounds a sort of stupid for you guys, but, as this is the brand-new pistol, and I field-stripped it first time, and I still don't have a lot of experience - I decided to have someone more skilled than me to take a look at it first. Scrivener, LenS, EC - thank you all for your invitations, I will be free most evenings this week and on the weekend, and if this time is comvinient for any of you, please let me know. I'll bring a couple of boxes of jacketed ammo with me.
However, there also some good news. My co-worker and friend Kelly went to the range with me today. She had never fired a gun before, and absolutely enjoyed shooting my 0.22 IZH-35! She said that now she is going to think seriously of getting a Blue Card and purchasing her own firearm. [smile]

From what I have been told this is standard on most newer 45 pistols. I have seen p220's do the same as well.
