it started out 12-27-14 when I sent in my initial paperwork to the CMP. On 1-12-15 i received an email saying they'd gotten my paperwork 12-29, in before the price hike! I ordered 2 service grade m1's, hoping for wwII era springfield's as I was born there and still live nearby as well as attended community college on the old armory grounds at STCC. I was super excited when on 1-20-15 I came home and my packages had arrived.

now Ill post some pics of the individual rifles starting with the one on the springfield receiver.

and then I saw this next photo in the trigger assembly

so far that is the springfield. It seems to be a mismatch of different parts and the main stock seems to be a replacement while the other pieces of wood are original. to keep them from getting confused I will follow up with another post showing the H&R.

if anyone can give me any info on these fine pieces of history i'd be much obliged.

now the H&R

and now, for the H&R!

the wood on the H&R seems to be all original and even has one cartouche. This one did not have a serial number on the outside of the trigger assembly however. If anyone has any questions or I missed anything, or can share any info on these with me I'd greatly appreciate it. Now to get them to the range!

Fantastic pair of rifles, congrats! Those dope cards are very cool. They could be from anyone but I've read the USMC regularly taped them there. Don't remove it!

There seem to be quite a few nice M1's coming out of the CMP lately. The stock on the HRA is an HRA stock. That's an eagle and stars.

The HRA might be all original. Have you removes the trigger groups yet? I'd bet you got a correct HRA.

Also there is not a serial number on the trigger guard. Those are drawing numbers and revision numbers. The one on your Springfield is a Winchester trigger guard.

this shows them next to each other, I didn't realize there was different style trigger groups. the springfield one is being a pain in the ass to get back into the stock while the h&r went right in. I did notice on the H&r what appears to be an SA on the safety but was wondering is it the beginning of the word safe?

That 3/8th DAS on the HRA is correct for the SN range. The 1/2 DAS star showing up in the 5.56 SN range so it's right there.

Damn you got GI wood and an HRA!? Not bad as I thought it was mostly SA that they were sending out now?

Are you saying it's an all matching/original HRA he's got? Forgive my ignorance.

Congrats, sweet pair, and quick turnaround. Last year I waited 5 months in the SA backlog, then another 5 months for an HRA I received in Nov. Did you ask for one of each or that's just how they came?
Grease 'em up and let us know how they shoot!

Unlikely it's "original" period correct possible yes. The HRA used all, sorts of parts from every manufacture especially towards the end of production and when over hauled any part could have been replaced with any serviceable parts in the bins at what ever arsenal it could have went through.
I received a HRA simular to yours all but the gas cyl and gas cyl. screw where HRA....I did not get a hra stock though. My 2nd hra came with correct stock but a complete mix master of parts.

There are web sites that you can log what you can identify for parts and it will give you details and hints on what could have been on the rifles.
In the end you have 2 fine examples with a good amount of items many folks desire.
Now get out and attend CMP shoots! That's what these old dogs need to do.

Original and rare items go to cmp auction.http://cmpauction.thecmp.org/catalog.asp?catid=362&n=M1-Garand

There was just a unissued SA post war rebuild that went for 5k

http://usriflecal30m1.com/History.aspx this should keep you up late a few nights.

It will be interesting to see if the SA with the dope in the trigger guard is close to those setting. Every rifle and shooter are different.
This is MY rifle.
If it's close your 100 yard come up from bottom will be around 10-12 clicks.....but everyone is different and depends on the hold on the bull.

M1s where not zero'd when built or rebuilt. They did have a method of testing batches of rifles to see that the overhaul procedures where doing what they should.

I have my paperwork filled out and sitting on my desk. I forgot that my GOAL membership expired, so I am waiting on my new card.

Now I have to decide if I can actually afford to put it in the mail. Still need to get it notarized too. I know that I will kick myself if I don't get one of these before they are gone.

im doubting they will be gone anytime soon but the price is not going down anytime soon.

What more do you want to know. You have 2 nice rifles with features some have been hoping for.
Now it's time for

http://www.garandgear.com/m1-garand-inspection

Then while it is disassembled record as many parts and markings as possible http://usriflecal30m1.com/Parts/Parts.aspx?action=home
Then record them
http://usriflecal30m1.com/DataSheets/Create.aspx

Then grease your M1s put them back together and find a cmp shoot at a local club and let them sing.

http://www.garandgear.com/m1-garand-grease

Then zero them
http://myplace.frontier.com/~aleccorapinski/id23.html

Have fun shoot often. I have a over haul manual with all the specs if you find a,part that you think might be out of spec.

Oh yeah I would recommend a spring kit from orion7 98g I think is the number. Figure most of the springs in these rifles are 50 yrs old.

from what Ive gathered the HRA was made between 54-56 making it a postwar ww2 rifle, but the stock is likely a ww2?(correct me if I'm wrong) the serial number on the springfield armory receiver seems to be from i think i found, may of 45, just towards the end of the war. very interesting, only wish that came with original wood as well. might have to order some more service grades hahaha it's almost tax return time!

http://usriflecal30m1.com/Parts/PartsList.aspx here's some info on parts that, your SA could have had on it.

For trying to I'd your stocks http://www.trfindley.com/pgm1stkid.html

Your bolt is from July 1945... garands where put together with what ever parts where on hand. That rifle could have went through arsenal several times and getting a 1945 bolt back into it would not be in heard of. Remember unless the parts are deemed not to be used every single garand part was reused until broken or worn out. Not to mention any new old stock that might have turned up along the way.

Whats some good inexpensive options for a slings?
I had grabbed a usgi one from Numrich but the hardware is all rusty.

I bought one from worldwarsupply.com as recommended by fellow NESer 'jpm' and I just recently put it on last weekend but haven't had a chance to try it out with all this friggen snow. It was real cheap and seems well made/good enough for me.
