PLEASE ATTEND the Marshfield Town Hall Meeting this Monday night to vote NO on citizens petition “Amendment 17” which if allowed will prevent Conservation from allowing hunting. Please attend and VOTE NO on #17.
WHEN AND WHERE: SPECIAL TOWN MEETING WARRANT Vote NO on # 17
Special Town Meeting, Monday, April 27, 2009
At 7:30 o’clock in the evening at Marshfield High School

**VOTE NO**VOTE NO *** VOTE NO ***VOTE NO **VOTE NO**VOTE NO ***

Why: If this article # 17 passed, would prohibit ConCom (Conservation Commission) from opening ANY ConCom land to hunting. ConCom has identified this amendment to be illegal and is not in favor of it and they will also recommend a No Vote.

This was Marshfield 's recent response in the ledger when the ConCom voted to ban it last week:
The conservation commission has continued the town’s ban on hunting on conservation land, with members saying the potential danger has been increased by the housing construction of recent years. The 4-1 vote took place at the commission’s meeting Wednesday night. The prohibition has been in effect since 1989. The commission listened to hours of comments from hunters and concerned residents at hearing sessions in recent months. It also received many letters expressing various viewpoints. The commission also voted not to back an item on the April 27 special town meeting agenda (Article # 17) It seeks to establish a bylaw prohibiting hunting on conservation land. If this town meeting article passes, it would overrule any decision to lift the ban by the Conservation Commission. (We do not want this article to pass as ConCom has said that they will gently reopen land and this article, if approved, would immediately and forever squash that opening of land)

Special note: Waterfowl hunting is not subject to this ban thanks to the 1640-1641 ordinance protecting fishing, fowling, scuba and navigation to the low water line. Not Applicable to Ducks/Geese.
Specific Reasons to VOTE NO:
To stop this citizen’s petition article #17 from limiting our hunting access and the loss of our rights to hunt and bear arms in our town. VOTE NO prevent this citizens petition (Article # 17) authored by a Marshfield resident of Dog Lane who is attempting to over rule conservation forever (As ConCom has suggested that they will allow opening of certain to be allocated hunting lands on an inch by inch basis this article would kill that-VOTE NO
The deer population is 4x (300% higher that it should be) what it should be in Marshfield (And so are the deer ticks) per Fish and Game. No hunting = more deer ticks = more lyme disease and the # of deer ticks is directly related to the # of deer – Continued hunting will help alleviate that by culling the herds. VOTE NO
Thank you,
Fellow Marshfield Sportsmen

PLEASE ATTEND AND VOTE NO ON #17
ARTICLE-17 “Will the Town vote to establish a General By-Law which states
the following: “The hunting of any wildlife on lands controlled by the Marshfield
Conservation Commission shall be prohibited” or take any other action relative thereto. Petition of William C. Finn, et.al. “
Recommendation: VOTE NO TO PRESERVE OUR HUNTER RIGHTS.
Know the Facts Before You Vote to Eliminate our Only Deer Management Option in Town!

► The deer population in Marshfield is 300% higher than what it should be!

► Lyme disease is caused by Deer Ticks.

► The number of Deer Ticks in an area is directly related to the number of deer.
MORE DEER = MORE TICKS = MORE LYME DISEASE

► The number of cases of Lyme Disease in Marshfield has increased dramatically over the past ten years and will only get worse if the deer population is not managed through regulated hunting.

► Deer are causing serious damage to wildlife habitat in town, which hurts all other wildlife species that depend on those habitats including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as plants.

► Deer are causing serious damage to private property including ornamental plantings and agricultural crops, affecting residents financially. This will only get worse.

► Many residents and visitors of Marshfield get into car accidents caused by deer-vehicle collisions or near misses, resulting in thousands of dollars of vehicle damage and potentially life-threatening injuries. Deer vehicle collisions will increase in Town if the deer population is not properly managed through regulated hunting.

► Hunting is safe…PERIOD. There has never been a non-hunter injured by a hunter in Massachusetts in recorded history!

► Existing hunting laws and regulations, in addition to strict education requirements for obtaining a hunting license, has maintained hunting as a safe activity in Massachusetts .

► Our children are at a much greater risk of being struck by lightning or killed or injured by a domestic dog than being injured by a hunter.

► No hunting is allowed within 500 feet of homes or within 150 feet of roads, nor is it allowed on Sundays.

► About half of the Conservation Land in Town is already closed to hunting per State Law.

► Deer hunting with archery equipment occurs for 6 weeks a year and with shotguns or muzzleloaders for 4 weeks per year for a total of 10 weeks of deer hunting. That leaves 42 weeks of the year (80%) with no deer hunting. We want to also be able to hunt upland (Pheasant, woodcock, quail, partridge etc as well)

VOTE NO on Article 17 and allow our Conservation Commission to responsibly determine how and when hunting will occur on our Conservation Land . Without hunting, we will lose all control of the deer population and will have to suffer the results including:

More Deer = More Deer Ticks = More Lyme Disease.

More Deer = More Deer-Vehicle Collisions.

More Deer = More Property Damage caused by Deer.

More Deer = Negative Impacts to the Habitats of all Wildlife.

PLEASE go to the Special Town Meeting at 7:30pm on Monday April 27th at the Marshfield High School and…VOTE NO on Article 17!
