I mailed the order on 08/15/14, e-mail back on 8/19/14, and got it today. 1 Month, much faster then I thought. It is a Springfield Armory Serial # 2889342 = May, 1944, with a SA Barrel (SA6535448 1064 Y59 P M) made in Oct. 1964. All marked parts are SA, and it is a service grade. The bolt cover is marked D28287-12SA S-B100. I was told the wood was USGI? Any info anyone has, would be much needed, as the M1 came about at least a month sooner then I thought, and I'm looking to buy M1 books. I have not shot an M1 since my Navy days 1968-72 and I can't wait to go to the range with it. The Bayonet, clips and Greek Ammo came in last week. Photos attached, sorry I took them very quickly, didn't want to put it down. Thanks - Arlie P1010249.jpg P1010248.jpg P1010251.jpg P1010254.jpg P1010252.jpg

Got Poyer's book(M1 Garand 1936 - 1957) & Thompson's M1 Garand , and watched You-Tube, anyway just field stripped it and found the following #'s.
Serial #2889342 SA, Bolt# D28287-12 SA, Receiver# D28291 32, Trigger Housing # D28290-12-SA, Operating Rod #D35382 9 SA, Barrel # SA6535448 10-64 Y59-Circle P M proof-mark, Stock:p (no circle or serifs) on pistol grip, Etched rebuild on receiver leg = A4 12-64 below. So I have a 70 year old M1 that was re-barreled on 12-64, all #'s are SA with-in the serial build. This M1 shows very little use, inside or out and I feel very lucky. Thanks to all for your help and replies.
Thanks - Arlie

Apender - here's some info on stocks. http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html looks like a nice rifle. you will find many service e grades will have very low T&M readings.... many of these rifles where over hauled for the last time by US and then lightly used.... also I'm sure cmp has crates of barrels.
nice looking rifle enjoy now do what JC Garand designed it to do...shoot often.

Any markings on the wood? Circle P or DAS stamp? Would highly recommend buying Poyer's "The M1 Garand" and then go through you rifle part by part. The Garand Collectors of America have a one page sheet on their website for ID'ing all the parts.

Apander, I got mine delivered on May 19. Sent my paperwork out back on Jan 2. It's a April of 1942 Springfield. The only things not Springfield are the new CMP stock and the H&R bolt. Been really hitting the stock with the boiled linseed oil. Happy with how it looks.

Greg

I ordered an HRA in July. No word until I read this thread. I called last Thursday and was told it was on back order and would I accept a Sprinfield instead. I said yes and it shipped the next day. I should have it next week!

I did the same. While having an HR would have been nice I don't mind having 2 Springfields

Goddamn, one of prettier rifles I've seen come out of the CMP recently. WWII serial, GI wood, good numbers...

I've ordered 4 springfields and never got a ww2 serial. I keep selling them in hopes of getting one. Very frustrating.

You can request anything and if it's right there in the crate they are working out of they will accommodate you. If not you get the nextone out of the crate. They can't set every order aside or they'd have piles of post-WWII and piles of "I want a WWII M1" stickies.

did you request ww2 serial? I did that with my first order and that's what they sent me.

Yes to the point i wanted one so bad i ordered 3 springfields....wouldn't you know they were all post war lol. Just my luck, so i sold them.

Did it come from CMP with stain on the stock? If so how did you strip it for the oil treatement.
thanks

when cmp 1st offered new stocks they where treating them with linseed oil. Now they just come from boyds/dupage with a light stain to even out the 3 pieces. it is very very thing sands off easily. You can also just apply what ever finish you like over it.

Our new stock sets have a Minwax mixture applied to them. The reason for the Minwax is to help match the handguards to the stock. Handguard color was not a concern on GI issued Garands but is of much concern now to the purchasers of new Walnut stock sets. We have learned this the hard way through the years...

Jbarila, just what mac1911 said. Light coat of stain was on it when shipped. I just hit it with some 0000 steel wool to smooth it a little and not strip the stain off, then started rubbing on the BLO.

Greg

Congrats! Looks like a real keeper. Very nice to see the lead times down. Got the email confirming my order was received this Monday. A WWII serial would be awesome, though mostly I am looking for a shooter and didn't think to request the low serial.

I decided to order the special grade with the Criterion barrel installed plus based on mac1911's good recommendation will have their custom shop do a trigger job which only costs $40. That said, would be awesome to get a service grade like yours with a WWII serial. Next time...

how did the process work out for the trigger job.......I was thinking of rebarreling one of my garands. I haveeverything but finish chamber reamer......for what I have into tools and donor rifle I could sell it all and buy a cmp special...and then some.......although my "I want to do it" side is strong with me!

I just called the nice lady at CMP and requested the 'Special' be sent to their custom shop for the trigger job. She later confirmed the trigger job was added to my work order. Gets me a little homesick talking to the folks down South. If anyone needs to call, patch me in- I provide free Southern to Yankee translation service LOL...

Edit- area they re-barrel and refinish the 'Specials' probably same as their custom shop, IMO.
