OK, I'd have guessed that there was a thread for this, but I just couldn't find it!

I'm interested in adding a 1911 to the collection, but don't want to spend more than $700, and don't especially want to spend that. $500's would be just about right.

I'm looking for opinions on solid quality 1911s in that price range. I'm considering a S&W used 1911, and a couple of others including a Para, or less expensive Kimber. Seen a Springfield GI model in that range, Auto Ordinance, and Rock Island are also in the ball park, but I've heard sketchy things about them (mostly the older models I think).

Any opinions on these or others?

I can't speak for any others but I bought a used stainless S&W 1911 for just a bit more than $500. I looked at the AO but the S&W Lifetime warranty sold me.

buy a used sw1911. i have seen them as cheap as
550.00 at some of the bigger shop. they have ext. thumb safet and novak sights( in my opion they are the best) and a beaver tail gripsaftey. all the good stuff for short money. i have 3 at the present time. i love them
my 2 cents

Your best bet is to buy a used S&W 1911. I wouldn't recommend the Auto Ord. because the quality is really lacking esp. in the parts they use. You will most likely change all the components out on that gun and it will cost you MUCH more than what you wanted to spend. That being said there are a ton of used SW1911's out there in the $500-$650 range. You can keep an eye on the forums here or post a Wanted to Buy thread here. Also keep an eye on some of the other forums or gunbroker.

As a matter of fact there is one for sale in the Want Ad that seems to be a great deal:

Another vote for a used Smith. Four Seasons regularly has them in the $550 price range.

+1 on used S&W 1911. I paid $550 for mine at Four Seasons when I bought mine.
