SHELBURN, IN (AP) - Police say an attacker who had tied up two women inside a rural western Indiana home was stopped when a neighbor shot him in the leg.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Department says a man broke into the home near the town of Shelburn Sunday morning, tying up a woman and her mother and sexually assaulting the younger woman.

Sgt. William Snead says the older woman was able to send a text message to a neighbor asking for help. The neighbor's boyfriend, Sonny Osborn, heard the confrontation and went inside with a gun.

Police say Osborn told the attacker to leave before shooting him in the leg three times. The man was treated at a hospital and was being held in the Sullivan County Jail.

A Shelburn man faces multiple criminal charges after being shot three times in the leg Sunday morning when he allegedly broke into a residence and held two people captive.

Ralph Rosa, 42, has been accused of criminal confinement, kidnapping, intimidation, battery, sexual battery, strangulation, burglary, attempted rape and sexual deviate conduct, and was awaiting a hearing in Sullivan Circuit Court. A date for that hearing had not been set, but it could possibly occur today.

Sgt. William C. Snead II reported that Rosa was shot in the leg three times after entering a mobile home in the 5800 block of North Center Road in Shelburn around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Witness statements claim that Rosa broke into the home looking for a man who Rosa claimed had stolen his guns a few days earlier. Rosa then allegedly held two women in the home captive, tying them both up before allegedly sexually assaulting one of the women in a bedroom. The other woman was able to send a text message to her husband in a nearby mobile home, and he responded to the scene along with another man who brought a rifle.

The man with the rifle told police he fired a warning shot in an attempt to get Rosa away from one of the women, Snead reported, but when Rosa did not comply, the man told police he shot Rosa three times in the leg.

Snead’s report states that when police arrived at the home, they found Rosa outside on the ground with the man with the rifle standing over him. Rosa repeatedly absolved the man with the gun of any wrongdoing, Snead reports, with Rosa stating, “Man, dude, that guy hasn’t done anything wrong,” referring to the man with the gun.

Rosa was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. No other arrests have been made in the case.

He shot him in the leg three times, you think he was aiming for something else.[rofl]

Glad to see neighbors doing the right thing, this could have been a lot worse for the victims.
