Hawken Shooting Advice

I shoot a 1861 Springfield replica and would like to get a Hawken or Great Plains style rifle. Does anyone own and shoot one regularly? What caliber? Do you hunt with it? Brand recommendations? Also want to pickup single shot M/L pistol. Any input is always appreciated.
