The Harrisburg Chapter of the NAACP is calling on Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell to suspend some civil liberties and impose martial law in the city to halt the wave of recent lawlessness.

Chapter President Stanley Lawson also called on Rendell to bring in the state National Guard for at least 30 days and to impose a curfew. In June, there have been at least 12 shootings, many of them in the daytime, including a man killed Wednesday at a busy city intersection during the lunch hour.

"The Guard is for floods and natural disasters. I don't know any more of a natural disaster than of our young people being killed," he said at a general membership meeting of about 25 people at Capitol Presbyterian Church, 14th and Cumberland streets.

"It's time for some real action," he said. "Right now the important thing is to stop this madness."

"We're beyond what the Harrisburg police department can do. We need help," Lawson said.

Martial law is a system of rules that takes effect when the military takes control of the normal administration of justice, normally in times of emergency.

At about the same time Lawson was speaking, Rendell was at another community meeting in Harrisburg where he promised to have state police patrol city streets to increase the presence of law enforcement.

Lawson noted that there was historical precedent for the Guard to step in, recalling the race riots in 1968 following the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King in Memphis, Tenn.

Lawson said that many reasons have been given for the wave of shootings, such as drugs, robberies and neighborhood turf wars. Fear is the bigger reason, he suggested.

"The young men, it's fear, it's just fear. They think: 'I'm going to get them before they get me,'" he said.

When one man noted the presence of the Guardian Angels from York coming to Harrisburg, Lawson responded: "I appreciate the Guardian Angels, but I see what's going on in York, Lancaster and Philadelphia. It's everywhere. I'm concerned about what is going on in Harrisburg."

Member and attorney Stanley Mitchell noted the civil rights organization is asking for a short suspension of some civil rights, but added: "We have the civil rights not to be shot."

I'm guessing that because the NAACP is calling on this, that the majority of the deceased are blacks. If martial law is imposed and the National Guard started arresting the perpetrators who it is likely are thmeselves black, will the NAACP start calling the Guard a bunch of racists?

Exactly - it's a setup.

Because then the NAACP can ask Obama to create a national police force that is as well funded and with as many people as our military. And make sure it is full of Obama worshipping NAACP members.

Kidding - sort of.

Harrisburg chapter of NAACP urges martial law............

Watch for a national trend if they get their wish there.

Why stop there, just A city??

Let's just give Obamba a funny hat, let him declare himself, colonel, general, field marshall or whatever the rank du jour is. Let the naacp call for and him to declare a coutrywide state of emergency, and go for the complete military take over of the US?

I don't think they'll get their wish because it will be evidence that a Democrat Governor and most likely a Democrat Mayor can't control crime in a city. Which also happens to be the Capital City of a major state.

Funny how the same outfits that feared that Pres. Bush would declare martial law (or something) now want this President to do the same thing.

I think you're way off on this..
colonel fidel
colonel mumir
general franco
General Hugo..

It is a well known and widely published rite of passage of military coups.
they all need a title and a funny hat. I heard "Queer Eye" has done segments on this. From the Queer Eye Article:

"Private" Carson Daley:
We already have Obama's uniform ready to go! We are going to go with a subtlely playful, yet serious blue (blue is the new khaki, that was so 70s). With a nice hat with lots of gold braid, (it kind of phallic actually, very masculine!)..
We're striving for a kind of cross between Sargent Pepper and Pol Pot! It's just going to be FABULOSO!

there's a franklin quote about giving up liberty for security that seems to apply here.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

I don't think Obama was kidding tho... [thinking]

I look at it this way, when the a**h***s that want to shoot each other get done killing each other, there will be fewer a**h*** to shoot at each other.

Then everyone else can get on with their lives.

Does that make sense?

I just don't see this going through, but the fact that they even toss it out there is just freakin insane. These people need shock therapy or something.

Here is some free advice for the NAACP: Perhaps if groups like yours did not spend so much time supporting left-wing politicians and collectivist economic policies our government might find the time and resources to engage in the fundamental task of protecting the innocent and prosecuting criminals. As it stands, the liberals supported by the NAACP have engaged in massive government expansion and laughable criminal prosecution and sentencing. Consequently, we have more crime and fewer resources to fight it. To now have the audacity to suggest suspension of civil liberties in order to pursue a fundamental duty of government is repugnant, particularly from an organization that did so much to achieve what it now claims to oppose. In short, f**k off.

I joke but it's actually a bit scary that people are that stupid. Seriously? you are a member of a "civil rights organization" that's going to "temporarily" give up your civil rights? I think that even if you said that really slowly to people who are all for this they still wouldn't see the problem...

I wish I had a "bitch-slap button" and I could rain down a bitch-slap on people sometimes. It'd have a camera hooked up to the great bitch slap hand device.

Perhaps they should consider calling in the Guardian Angels to solve their problems.
(Shit Heads ALL)

Oh, well. Another state capital gone down the tubes.

(There's a Three Mile Island joke somewhere in all this, but I just can't think of it.)
