Lately I have decided that a flashlight would be a great asset to have in a situation where a night time threat is encountered. Call me master of the obvious if you like. Anyway, I have been debating buying a weapon mounted light for my handgun and am in the process of weighing the pros and cons of that vs. having a light in my opposite hand of my 1911. I decided that I needed to practice with a small flashlight that I own and was experimenting with holding the gun in one hand and holding the light up to the gun in my support hand using a technique that Ive read about as an option for this situation. Well, the absolute first time I did this and aimed at the targed the light pressed the magazine release, the magazine fell out, hit the ground and the first round in the magazine popped out to add insult to injury. Funny in a practice scenario at the range, not so funny if God forbid I had to pull my gun on an intruder and that happened.

Any advice on lighting up the situation and what techniques work?
