An AK-47 rifle, which the sheriff's office said was legal and belonged to Longoria, also was taken from the home.

"It's a personal item," Longoria said Monday in Tampa, Fla., where the Rays' exhibition game against the Yankees was canceled because of rain.

You do realize that in the vast majority of the Union, people don't even know what trigger locks are, right? And that they don't deter theft?

Even most "safes" won't do much to stop a determined thief.

What does locking have to do with it? In most states it isn't required. And it was stolen... meaning a criminal took it.

When you get into quality safes which are properly installed, you start getting into theft-prevention territory. "Safes" which are actually just security cabinets (stack-on, etc), and/or which aren't properly attached to the house, might prevent some stuff from getting taken in a smash-n-grab, but a determined thief will NOT be stopped.

FTR, AKs are cheap to make. But they get very expensive to collect in the US if you aren't buying romanian variants.
