Davenport PD has a new tool to connect the dots between gun-related crimes

Too bad it’s so tough to change a firing pin and extractor.....

And what about rounds that have been chambered in multiple firearms???!

States formerly maintaining such fired case databases have shut them down as the cost vastly exceeded the utility. In MD's case, I believe they stated zero crimes had been solved through its use (one source says one case, but not really "solved" so much as it was persuasive to a jury).

Maryland scraps gun "fingerprint" database after 15 failed years

Swap out barrel.. Check.
Swap out firing pin to change impact impression...Check
Or, use revolver to retain cases...Check

$400k well spent

I did **NOT** spend that much on barrels, firing pins or revolvers.....
I think he was talking about the 400K the PD spent on the ID system.

This only works, I'm guessing, for a crime commited with a semi-auto.. but...
What's to stop someone from grabbing a bunch of say... 45ACP casings from a range and using a .45ACP revolver in a crime? Drop the casings from the range. The casings from the revolver are retained.

99,000 leads and almost no crimes solved sure sounds like a wild waste of resources.

But if it saves just one child. . . who already got shot because we've got the spent case. . . . Hmmm. Wait. Dammit!

It's the Law & Order Effect. It was on L&O 20 years ago so it must be effective!
