No, he was injured when HE UNEXPECTEDLY DISCHARGED HIS PISTOL into his foot. The way they always write this stuff in the passive voice is right up there with "clips" and "gunman" for me.

It's done on purpose to villify guns--a lot of non-gun folks actually think that guns can just "go off" by themselves.

Best is: If they came out with a manual safety model, most police forces WOULDN'T buy them as they might cause an officer to not be able to deploy in time.
