VANCOUVER, Jan. 16 /CNW/ - Professor Gary Mauser will speak on Wednesday,
January 18, at a Fraser Institute policy briefing in Vancouver, on "Guns and
Gangs in Canada: What Should We Do?"

The recent wave of gun violence in Vancouver and Toronto has revived the
debate around banning handguns as a crime prevention strategy. Mauser will
argue that Canada's universal gun registry has been plagued by a variety of
problems and creating more of the same failed gun laws will not make a
difference in crime prevention.

Based on research in Canada and around the world, Mauser will discuss
alternative and more effective strategies to combat violent crime. He will
also discuss the impact of increasing resources available to the police force
or lengthening prison terms.

Mauser is a Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration and the
Institute for Urban Canadian Research Studies at Simon Fraser University. For
the past 15 years, he has conducted research on the politics of gun control,
the effectiveness of gun control laws, and the use of firearms in self
defense. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the British Columbia
Wildlife Federation and the President of the Barnet Rifle Club.
