Bolt Rifle in .223 Remington 700/ Savage 10/ CZ 527

I'm honored by your accolades, but unfortunately I'm not quite as good as you suspect. I understand where you are coming from. HP takes quite a lot of time and I struggle with the time requirements to get to the matches I attend.

The M16 & A1 had 1/12 twist barrels and the USMC use to shoot them to 500 yards with the M193 55rd ball ammo. A 1/12 would certainly work for shooting out to 300 yards as your OP mentioned. If you stay focused on getting a 1/9 twist barrel, you might miss out on a good rifle with a 12 twist.

If you were going to regularly shoot out further than 300 yards, I would suggest skipping right over the 9 and going to an 8 as that will comfortable handle all but the longest of match bullets where as the 9 twist is hit or miss with 77s. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't

My club has 300 so I dont intend to do anything regularly past that. Perhaps I might consider doing a prone match up @ nashua for fun but I cant say I can see a time in the near future where life will allow the time to do anything more than just a fun match here or there. Nashua is pretty forgiving light and wind wise I did use 69's at 600 once as well. I wasnt really good enough to know the difference between 69's 75's and 77's other than proper windage and elevation and correction as the course of fire progressed. That 7 8 or 9 was probably just me and the occasional 10 or X was the miss!

Do you have any links/cites to back up that statement?

there are numerous writings on this subject. I called Remington directly to ask about the very inexpensive m700 varmints that were on sale at Dicks. they told me in very direct words to NOT shoot 5.56mm out of their .223 rifles , they went on to say that they do sell 5.56 M700 rifles and they are labeled police or tactical. The details given were not only was it unsafe and would void the warrantee, but due to the different chamber and throat the accuracy would be affected
here is the definition of the differences

The .223 Remington is a sporting cartridge with almost the same external dimensions as the 5.56×45mm NATO military cartridge. The name is commonly pronounced either two-two-three or two-twenty-three. It is loaded with a 0.224-inch (5.7 mm) diameter jacketed bullet, with weights ranging from 40 to 90 grains (2.6 to 5.8 g), though the most common loading by far is 55 grains (3.6 g). When loaded with a bullet that expands, tumbles, or fragments in tissue, this cartridge is capable of delivering devastating terminal performance.

While the external case dimensions are very similar, the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm differ in both maximum pressure and chamber shape. The maximum and mean pressures for some varieties of the 5.56 mm (different cartridge designations have different standards) exceed the SAAMI maximums for the .223 Remington, and the methods for measuring pressures differ between NATO and SAAMI.[2] The 5.56 mm chamber specification has also changed over time since its adoption, as the current military loading (NATO SS-109 or US M855) uses longer, heavier bullets than the original loading did. This has resulted in a lengthening of the throat in the 5.56 mm chamber. Thus, while .223 Remington ammunition can be safely fired in a 5.56 mm chambered gun, firing 5.56 mm ammunition in a .223 Remington chamber may produce pressures in excess of even the 5.56 mm specifications due to the shorter throat.[3]

I have 2 Rem 700 in 223, I took the cheapo 700 from dicks $400, put it in a HS stock or B&C stock approx $200, egw 0MOA base $40 and a Nikon 3-9 in burris rings $200, tuned the triggers myself, load up some 40gn V-Mac over 27gn Varget and go shoot under .5 MOA out to 300yds. Love the 700, and when the barrel is junk i am going to go with a fast twist 223AI and have more fun.
