Backpack knife suggestions

I have had surprisingly good luck with every S&W knife I've owned. Don't discount them because they are inexpensive. No they aren't top of the line but they get the job done.

I have a few of there folding knives, for a cheap knife I have no complaints. I carry one daily at work and its works fine for cutting small rope or twine.

I just ordered a SOG seal pup on amazon for $38. From the reviews I read they seem to be a much better knife than the S&W fixed blade for not much more money

I have a becker 5, Rat 7, Kabar Marine knife. I really like them all for different reasons. I ALWAYS have multiple knives with me at all times!

Fantastic choice. AFAIC, </thread> [smile]

This. Any of the ESEE line will serve you well

ESEE 3 for sure. I have an ESEE 4, and I think it maybe a little too big for a backpack strap.

I would strongly recommend the Esee knives suggested or the Mora knives if you want to go super cheap.

Morakniv Companion.

I do currently have an Ontario RAT-3 (nearly the same knife as the ESEE-3 for far less money) on the shoulder strap of a backpack. But to be honest, I prefer the Mora. Cheaper. Lighter. Sharper. Of course the sheath is inferior.

I carry a Mora. Why not just put it in your pack?
this...they are cheap too.

Seems like the ESEE 3 and Mora are the favorites.

I actually carry the Mora for backpacking, and have a RAT-3 (Ontario version of the ESEE 3 for 50% less) attached to my survival bag. Love them both.

If I had to chose, I'd pick the Mora. For $13-14 dollars you get a lightweight but strong and ridiculously sharp knife. Want a carbon version, or stainless version? They have both. Different colors, sheaths, built-in fire starters? They have it. Want something a bit beefer? Yep, they make a heavy duty. And you are still talking 5-7 times cheaper than an Esee, and 3-4 times cheaper than the Ontario RAT-3.

Personally, if I was getting an Esee 3, I'd get a Morakniv Companion anyways just because it is so cheap.

Mora, $13!:

I have both a Condor ($36)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002CC6BPM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and a Schrade ($41)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0033H7VI6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like them both.

The Schrade is a monster (in a good way) and it's almost as good as a hatchet for splitting wood with a baton.

The Condor comes with a deep leather sheath that holds the knife very securely. The Schrade comes with a more tactical-type synthetic sheath and is as sturdy as the knife itself.

Hey y'all, I recently went on an overnight hike at panther creek and brought along the Kabar mark1. However, I didn't use it much except for a little fire/food prep. It worked excellently but I was thinking about moving down to a smaller knife that would be suitable for food prep and making kindling and such. I had either the bk11 or the bk16 in mind. Also, japanese cleaver vs chinese cleaver I wanted something more weather resistant due to the fact we were at the falls and my Kabar has a leather handle and sheath. I'm probably going to keep the mark 1 for hunting purposes only. Any suggestions would be great.

Panther Creek was a very fun hike and the falls were awesome. I would strongly recommend the hike.

I had a big ass D2 super modern new & improved KaBar strapped to my pack for a while. I found it to be an unsatisfactory system. When I wanted to use the knife I wasn't wearing the pack. Which lends itself to putting the thing down somewhere , cause the sheath isn't where it belongs , on your belt.

Strapping it to your gear makes sense with LBE rigs , because they stay on after your ruck is off.

Knife goes on pants' belt now. But not the KaBar , I have smaller knives ( RAT 3 or benchmade Snody design ) which are more useful for the majority of matter separation tasks.

This.

I've carried a lot of rucks and a lot of knives, and never once have I needed the knife while my ruck was on. YMMV, obviously.

I'd go Mora if all else were equal and I was looking for an "extra" fixed-blade.

@scarlett.penelope Brought this on the last overnight hammock trip up to Lonesome Lake up on the mountainside and it was great! And I just found out couple weeks ago Duluth Trading Post is now stocking them in store. So if you’re anywhere near Burlington you can check it out in person or if you’re near the Lowell area you can check out mine.
