My great uncle said to me
A magazine contains the ammo a clip loads ammo into a magazine
Ex: M1 garand clip/enbloc is to load the rifles internal magazine.
M2 ball on 5 round clips is to load the internal magazine.
The BAR had a magazine you install into the rifle.

I think the post war guys coined a phrase even if wrong it stuck around .

Growing up, we had one kicking around the basement,
but no Garand. I thought it was a mismatched clip-on end-plate
from a curtain rod.

And all this time I thought that a magazine is something made from paper that you read.

I’ve given up on correcting folks on the whole clip vs magazine thing. It easy enough to know what they really mean from context. I grew up conflating clip with magazine because, as a kid, I learned about guns from my dad and his friends. They were all WW2 vets and mostly familiar with the M1 Garand, where the clip held the rounds and you put it in the rifle. They ended up identifying anything that held the rounds you put into a gun as a clip. The enbloc clip is unique in that you actually insert it in the magazine and leave it there, so it was easier to confuse it with an actual detachable magazine then the older stripper clips were. So when we were kids we always called “clips” stripper clips and anything else just a clip. It wasn’t until I was older and became more of a gun enthusiast that I learned the difference. And then for a while I was a real zealot, even always correcting my older brother when he referred to the “clip” for his AR. I finally realized it was a pretty minor point and really didn’t impact what was being communicated, so now I just let it go.

While working on a minor situation for a client I was called by an old acquaintance who is an ATF agent. He and I were talking about various things he's working on and he used the term "clip" for an M4 so I blurt out "magazine". He says that clips are for rifles and magazines are for pistols. After I explain the difference he says hmm maybe you're right but that's how they differentiate the two.
