Affordable alternatives to Pelican Cases

Looks decent. The rifle case is $100 and the foam is an extra $30. Saves about $60-70 off a similar Pelican 1750 from Amazon.

I like Boyt cases for my Pelican knockoffs. They have a rifle case, including foam, for $99, also at Amazon. The hardware is all metal. I have one that I use to take a couple AKs to the range.

What I dislike most about Pelican/SKB is that they require padlocks, which add a ton of weight. Seems hard to locate cases with decent integrated key locks. Here's another option: Case Club. http://www.caseclub.com

I just got it. I like the way my 1911's and glock's fit. It has a slots to hold 12 mags. And a open place for ammo and other stuff. I'm going to the range on Monday. I will let you know how it works.

Plano makes a Pelican type case for about $60.

i picked up a smaller plano rifle case off amazon for $35 and a plano 4 pistol case for about $23...def not high quality but they are good enough as long as you're not banging your cases around or need extra room to put a bunch of other stuff in them...i only put the firearms in these and throw a zipper lock on them just to comply...everything else goes in my range bag...works for me to transport to and from the range...

Bass pro has the boyt h51 on sale for 149. This compares to the pelican 1750 and has great reviews. Sale ends Sep 27th

Edit - Foxborough has 2 left.

Edit2 - Ended up paying $125 for mine. I bought giftcards for Bass Pro through cardpool and save 17% on $150. I'll post some pics of it when it's in hand.

I picked it up. I am impressed but I don't have a Pelican 1750 to do a side by side comparison with. One thing this is missing is Pick and Pluck foam, that would make custom fitting it easier.

I don't want to cut the foam yet. It consists of 3 pieces of solid foam. A Top and bottom piece that are ~ 2" thick and a middle piece that is ~ 1.5" thick.

I didn't pull any of the foam and I was able to close the case on the two rifles. It does buldge a litte in the middle but the gaskets are tight.

All said and done, for $125 out the door, this is well worth it. This has no problem closing on 1 rifle without cutting the foam with no bulging. I haven't' tried yet, but this should fit the ar-10 in a drag bag / shooting mat case inside the hardcase. That is what I want along with the ability to transport 2 rifles without messing them up and also airline carry.

Nice. My Boyt case doesn't have the three layers of solid foam that need to be cut, it just has eggcrate foam in the middle. If you don't want to custom cut the solid foam just yet, maybe you could just set it aside and replace it with a piece of eggcrate foam.

When you are ready to take the plunge into custom cutting the solid foam, an electric carving knife works great. I bought one just for that purpose. If you save the cut-out pieces, you can put them back in, swap the middle layer to the bottom, and reconfigure with the fresh piece.

Any places in MA sell just the foam? I f-ed up the foam that came with the case and want to try again

I have one of the Seahorse cases like that except its configured a little differently as it has more slots for magazines but still holds four pistols. It's a great case and has the little air valve thingy. On mine, the pistol slots are designed so that the gun goes down on an angle butt up. Its a good case for semi autos but not revolvers...they'll fit 4 and 5 inchers but they don't sit in the slots very well.

Just do a youtube search on how to cut foam for a gun case. There are a bunch of helpful videos. Very simple to do.

Thanks for the tips. I have seen it done before but I have always had pick-n-pluck. When the time does come I will use the electric knife and checkout some you tube videos as you mentioned.

I just checked Boyt's site and they do sell spare foam for their cases. They H51 foam will run me $30 for just the middle piece. I might see if I can source some foam elsewhere for cheaper so I can use the case for multiple rifles and have one piece cut to fit each. FYI - boyt's foam if anyone is looking - https://boythardcasesandvaults.com/product/hard-case-replacement-foam/

I think I have the same case you have. It is pretty nice.
