Anyone know where I can get a few 55 Gallon food grade barrels
in MA (or RI)? I most of the country, Coca-Cola sells off their used
syrup bottles for $5-$15, but here I got a "no" from Coke and Pepsi.
Working on Polar in Worcester. Any thoughts? With shipping, a new barrel
runs almost $100. Ouch.

Many years ago I got a used pickle barrel from McDonalds - 55 gal blue high-density polyethylene. Sliced it up to make a Wisby-style coat of plates and used it as my body armor in SCA tournaments for years afterwards.

Try calling this place, someone I work with buys some from them.

There is a sausage/kielbasa place where I was going to buy some of the blue barrels for a floating dock. They get pig intestines in them. Yecch!

Just out of curiousity, what do plan to do with them?

I don't like having no control over my water supply. In the event of
some major problem (or even a water source contamination) our
town's water could be useless or unavailable. Living in town, that makes
our home almost uninhabitable. I used to live rural where we would
lose power for about 3 weeks/year. We always kept some water on hand
to use until the power came back. You can use snow for the toilets, but
not really for drinking and food prep without a lot of work.

Ah, I see. I do not like the city water for drinking, so I get Polar delivered. I just make sure that I have at least 5 or 10 gallons on hand when I order more.
