So I have to go to the MCX at Devens sometime this week to get anodized medals for the upcoming Marine Corps birthday ball. Can I store my pistol in a lock box and declare it at the front gate as an active member of the military, or do I have to leave it at home and forget about carrying that day?

I bet it is way too much of a pain in the ass even if there is a provision for it. I would just leave the gun at home, if I was in your shoes.

Park at the shopping plaza, basically right across the street from the gate. Walk thru the gate to clothing sales. It is a short walk.

Thinking outside the box...I like it! I will use this option as it covers all the bases and keeps me armed and ready when not under the illusion of safety on a military installation.

You know, of all the things The Honorable Mr. Trump promised us, I really wish he kept his word on allowing military members to carry personal protection firearms on base both on and off duty...sure, there would be incidents, probably involving alcohol and increased rates of suicide among service members, but I think it’d be worth it in the end.

And thank you all for the replies...I figured as much that it’d probably be more hassle than it’s worth, but also didn’t want to disarm myself for any more time than absolutely necessary.

Here is the operative section:

PROHIBITED ITEMS are posted as follows but not limited to those noted:
PERSONAL FIREARMS, WEAPONS, KNIVES, STUN GUNS, BB PISTOLS, EXPLOSIVES, ETC. IF ITS NOT ISSUED BY THE GOVERNMENT DO NOT BRING IT ON POST. DRUGS, Herbal medications unless prescribed to you by your doctor and in the original container. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES in common areas.

Hah...so if I have a medical marijuana card, i’m OK...lol. The world we live in.

Nope, from what I understand medical MJ is not prescribed but "Recommended" by a doctor. Covers you under those state laws, but the federal government doesn't see it that way.

If you bring your "medical" pot with you, you just might end up on the "Group W" bench.

The post commander of each installation can regulate fire arms possession. Devens and hanscom are no go for visitors to carry or posess a personal fire arm. Only service members with housing on the base may have a fire arm in possession. Also......if they happen to have the bomb dogs at the gate......be prepared to be searched. I was stationed at hanscom a few years ago. I was coming to work and the bomb dog was with the guards. He alerted on my vehicle even though I had no fire arms with me. However.....I shoot 3 times a week on average so the dog "hit" on the odor coming from my vehicle. The guards had me pull over and search my car with the dog.......who proceeded to alert at every place in my car I had ever stored a gun. glove box, center console, under the passenger seat, and he went ballistic on my trunk. The guard asked "you don't have your fire arms with you today do you"? I said no but I shoot a lot and was at the gun club last night. He smiled and let me through. THOSE DOGS ARE NO JOKE.

I was at camp robinson Arkansas about 5 years ago tdy..........the post commander allows fire arms........his rule is unloaded and leave them in your vehicle. no shit!

Back on topic........as suggested.......store it properly in your vehicle and walk through the gate and you'll be good.

Much smaller installation, but the same applies with regards to civilians coming to bases.. There is a massive electronic sign at the gate of the Natick Army Labs that Reads, No Conceal Carry on Base.

The easiest choice is to leave it at home. Per DoD Directive 5210.56 (interestingly published while Obama was still in office) active duty .mil can request permission to carry concealed on base for reasons other than official duties. However, by and large no procedures have been put in place for actually authorizing that. Alternatively you can declare it at the gate and wait for a military police/security forces car to escort you to the armory. You'll check it in there, get a receipt, and when you're ready to leave they'll give it back and escort you to the gate. Not sure how they handle ammo; I've only done it that way with an unloaded shotgun.

I can only speak for Fort Devens, but if you declare a firearm at the gate, the official procedure is to deny you entry. They won't store the firearm for you. There is usually only one or two cops on duty and they just don't have time for that.

I'll tell you straight up.....all that shit ain't gonna happen at the devens gate. That dod cop is gonna tell you to turn around and leave.
